Wierd behavior after washing

It may have been a stupid thing to do, but I washed some parts of my
engine off with some engine degreaser and a hose. Not a powerful
spray at all though. Anyway here's what happened when I drove after
that.
First, the engine ran normally but the 'check engine' light was on
right away when I started it. I drove slowly (in town) for about 10
minutes (light still on) then I let it sit for about 15 minutes. I
started it up again and it drove normally and the check engine light
was on for a few seconds then it turned off. Then after about 5
minutes of driving it started to idle really high (1700rpm). After
about 5 minutes of that it began to idle normally. At that time I was
cruisin up main street about 2500rpm in 3rd gear (25-30mph maybe),
with light accelerator pressure, and the engine hesitated badly,
almost stalled. There was a funny smell at this time, almost like
when the radiator overheats, but the temp was normal. It did that a
couple times and then the check engine light came on again and I
drove home. Then I parked it, and haven't driven anywhere yet.

Is my car just insulted and being bitchy or could there really be
something majorly wrong? Is it just going through a wierd cycle of
drying out or something? Has anyone else experienced this after
washing the engine? If I check the error codes on the computer will
it tell me why the check engine light came on?

TIA,
Dan

Dan,
More than likely your problem is that you have water that hasn't dried
out yet sitting in the area where the pulg wire boot connects with the
plugs. This is a normal thing for the 2.2's because the boots don't totally
protect the plugs from water getting down into the recessed holes in the
block, especially from even a light pressure washing or hose down. This
water can cause some electrical interferance in the engine components and
set off the ecu, plus make the car run like a Civic, oh I mean crap. To
fix, start up your car and let the engine warm up, no need to drive it, shut
it down and remove the plug wires (if this is your problem then you should
notice that the boots are wet and water down by the plugs). If you have an
air compressor availible blow out the recess along with the plugs, if not,
try soaking up as much water with paper towels or a chamois. Now leave sit
for 15 minutes or so, the heat from the warm engine block will also help in
evaporating any of the water that is left. Dry off the plug wire boots and
reconnect, start it back up and your car should be as good as new. Hope
that this is the problem and not something major. john k

Dan-3 things to check: the connector to your MAF sensor box, the connector to your throttle body & the connector to your IAC valve. If any one of them get water inside the connector, you`ll have a problem. If you can, undo all 3 & let them dry out (help with a Q-tip won`t hurt, either.) To SAFELY clean your engine next time, cover the 3 aformentioned connectors with tape, a baggie, whatever, to keep them dry. Next, use Simple Green spray on all the dirty parts (use a brush & respray on the dirtiest locations), & use a low-pressure setting @ the DIY carwash to clean the warm engine off. I`d suggest you use the no-spot spray as it`ll keep waterspots off + it`s always @ low pressure. Hope this helps as I`ve been washing engines this way since 1960 with no problems. Good luck---ROD (AZ.)

yeah, usually after i wash my engine bay i get error codes related to the
fuel injectors and MAF sensor. reset the codes (NOT the ECU), drive it for a
day or two, then let us know.

so, i take it if i'm real careful i could use the local auto wash
sprayer to spray off my engine eh? obviously since you guys have
been doing it for a while... i was thinking about doing that before
but thought i'd better not but one of my local washes has a specific
setting on the sprayer for car engines. pretty cool, hope it works
well.

You guys really don't want to know what goes on at a detail shop then ;)

I've worked at two a while back. It's pretty much spray shit loads of degreaser in the engine bay, let it sit for a little, crank up the pressure washer and the boiler so you get HOT HOT water, and spray everything in the engine compartment GOOD!! Then after its dry they spray a dressing all over the engine. The good ones use a non-flammable dressing, the not-so-good ones, may use the same dressing as they use on the tires, which is flammable ;)

We had a ford thunderbird, mid 90's that was running like shit after they cleaned the engine compartment. After a while running and it still wouldn't dry out, they took the plug wires out, and this was a DOHC motor and the plugs went straight down into the head. There was a pool of water still in the plug holes. DUHHH.....no wonder it wouldn't run worth shit....hehe

Lemme tell ya, some of the stuff that happens in a detail shop.....It's best not I say anything more....
