Subject: MAF sensor?

Your Mass Air Flow sensor does not control air / fuel ratio. It tells the ECU how much air is passing through the intake system so the ECU can adjust the fuel flow accordingly. For a good discussion of the MAF function vs the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) type sensor go to the following URL;

Let me know if the info helps you any and if you know anybody with first hand experience fitting 2.5 heads onto our turbo 2.2 block

not to be smart or anything but "Your Mass Air Flow sensor does not
control air / fuel ratio. It tells the ECU how much air is passing
through the intake system so the ECU can adjust the fuel flow
accordingly" isn't that basically the same thing? well that's what i
was basically saying anyway. man i just really hate to pay 300 some
odd dollars for a stinkin maf sensor. when i get the chance i'm
takin mine out and lookin at it. i'm fairly decent with electronics
so maybe it just shorted or something(yeah, let me FIU even more).
that is a good article at cobbtuning btw thanks.

Mike,

Save yourself ALOT of headache. Mine was on the frits last summer, and I had been plagued with intermittent problems for almost a year before I was damn sure it was the sensor. I had everything from total loss of power, car stalls, to wouldn't stay running. The thing was that it was totally intermittent. The last time it acted up big, and finally left a code to confirm what I had previously suspected. If you do have a code or had a code at one time, or could even borrow someone else's to test. Don't get a junk yard one. Electronics are not good to get from junkyard.

oh yeah i have the code for it. it just suck driving with this
freakin thing acting the way it does. as for the junk yard, hell the
only one around here that'd have a maf would probably charge me damn
near the same price as a new one anyway. they robbed me for a
stinkin windshield wiper. oh well guess i'll have to start counting
pennys. josh, i take it you did end up getting a new maf already
right? how much did you pay and where did you get it? i seen a site
around here somewhere for replacement mafs in different sizes for
different hp-ed engines and i think they are reasonably priced but if
anyone knows of any discount mafs please drop me a line. oh, what
would happen if i got a slightly bigger sized maf and ran it now
before any other upgrades? would it function correctly?

Yeah Mike,

I did end up replacing it. All my probs were solved afterwards. It was $300 from the dealer. I would highly recommend against gettting anything but the one that is meant for your car, ie the one from the dealer. Two reasons, you'd have to retrofit the electrical system plugs to fit as well as the intake system, and after you get done with that, there's no telling the voltages would match what the stock one used. So just get one from the dealer. It's goin to be $300 pretty much anywhere. You may try the USMB http://pub1.ezboard.com/bultimatesubarumessageboards I know there are people that have ordered from subie dealers online or over the phone and got discounts, I think quality subaru, and a couple others. Worth a shot I guess.
