Car Pulls

I have a 90 Legacy LS sedan with front wheel drive. When I accelerate
the car pulls to the right (if I let go of the steering wheel it will
go to the right). If I'm not accelerating it goes straight.

I've had the front end aligned.

Any ideas? Is this normal?

Thanks.

This is normal. The Front wheel drive is not a LSD. So on
accelleration, often the car will pull towards the drive wheel (right
wheel) Not sure exactly why when the car obviousely has traction.

This is what i think it is. Please someone correct me if i'm wrong.

ok Bullonie.. I have a FWD car 2.2l it's a wagon so maybee it has some weight.. but i race people all the time (do no condone strret raceing) i have NEVER had my car pull to either side.. I DID one time have bad alignment, and after i had the car re-aligned it was WAY worse that it was originally, as my TIRES were worn extreamly by the mis-alignment..

i got new tires and the pull went away.. and have never had any directional pull..

but that my experiance..

David, just wondering, is yours auto or manual?

I find that when really going at it, first to seconds spins the
wheels for about 1 or 2 seconds, and then pulls to the right, and you
can feel the right wheel grip and pull the car. Second to third can
also pull to the right with a little wheelspin too.

Whether that's because i have more power after some of the mods i've
done i'm not sure. But whenever i am 'racing' it, it pulls to the
right. I don't really think about it any more, you just have to hold
the steering wheel firm, and pull back on the harder gear changes.

Sounds nice!!

Is that in the wet!

I've got Bridgestone Potenza's and they only spin for a second in the
dry. they're 205/60/15.
In the wet, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, all spin right through.

What mods have you done to your car??

Don't know much about the Sooby auto's, that's a pretty good burn!
Is that something to do with the box that it can go for that long?

Ditto that. Mine does pull a little under hard acceleration. Nothing to be worried about.

If you ever have an old set of tires and want to do a monster bake show, I've got just the trick, (Assuming you have a FWD car and not AWD car). I did this back in high school on graduation day. All the motor heads and stuff were doin burn outs and stuff. My one friend had been buggin me about my car and stuff, doin "front wheel peel" as he called it. So I said....Alright, just to shut you up. I got facing the opposite direction of the way I wanted to go. Pulled the e-brake, put the car in neutral, revved it a little, I think around 2-3 grand. Then popped it in gear. Got the tires spinning, modulated the throttle so it wouldn't shift. Then cranked the wheel all the way to the left! That brings all the weight of the left side so the tire just sits there and spins like a mother f#$%. It sat there for a several seconds, finally got enough momentum, swung the ass end around, had to drop the e-brake cause it was draggin the ass end. Then maneuver around two sets of speed bumps after the car moving about 25-30 mph in the parking lot. Saw my buddy later that day......he was like...."DUDE, that was an awesome burn-out!!"

So there's the secret to monster burn outs on FWD cars :)

I have another FWD car that doesn't pull to the right so I wasn't
sure…

It sounds like the general consensus is that there's nothing to worry
about when it pulls to the right when accelerating.

Thanks.

Could be wheel alignment. If you are from a right hand drive country
you will find that the roads lean to the right, so you car will
always have a tendancy to track to the right. Tyres play a huge part
in this, directional tyres are the worst and will track and follow
any rut or slant in a road under acceleration some are worse than
others.

The half shafts are equal length so there is no torque stear under
acceleration, so you can't do any balancing they are already balanced
unlike most other front wheel drive cars.

Try and get all four wheels aligned, and get new tyres on them all. Just
getting your fronts done doesn't solve all the problems.

They did actually align all four wheels.

When I coast, or drive under "normal" power it goes straight. It only
pulls to the right under heavy acceleration.

I figured if it was an alignment problem it would always pull to the
right, not just when accelerating.

Hi-if you don`t have a torque-steer problem, it`s probably the right front tire. Here`s how to check: swap your front tires across (right on left, left on right) & see if the pull either stops or it then pulls to the left. Either result means you have a tire & not an alignment problem. Usually it`s a broken cord in the tire or possibly just a defective one. If it stops pulling either way & goes straight, leave it alone if you wish or just replace the defective tire. Good luck---ROD (AZ.)

Maybe I should have completely explained what I meant when I said I
had the front end aligned…

Right after I had the front end aligned and saw it pulled to the
right (only under heavy acceleration) I brought it back to the
mechanic and had him swap the front tires. It still pulled to the
right when accelerating, though it still didn't pull to the right
when coasting or under low power.

I suppose it could be the tires, but it sure looks like it is
something in the car (design?).

Thanks.

I have a 90 Legacy LS sedan with front wheel drive. When I accelerate
