I've had my car for a night and I'm ready for the modding to begin. I
took apart the intake and have noticed how restrictive it looks. I'd
like to either buy an intake or make one. I've searched around and
haven't found anything for sale. Jc sports is out of business, so they
aren't an option. Anyone know where to get an intake, or have
experience fabbing one up?
Thanks

Check out cobb tuning, they are working on a "true" cold air intake. You are probably better off, just removing the snorkel in the fender, and getting a K&N drop in filter.

Yeah I was thinking about going that route. I dont think the stock
system is very free flow though. The round opening of the top intake
piece looks like it would cause restriction. Hard to describe without
a visual, but this area looks iffy. I've got a little seat of the
pants data to back this up. I drove a little bit without the intake on
at all, noticed a huge improvement over stock. Then just with the top
part of the filter box, didn't seem to pull as hard. Both run times
were without a filter (dont worry it wasn't for long.) Thats why I was
looking for a new system.

You said you were driving without the intake off? How so? The intake is connected to the MAF sensor, and that has to be connected for the car to run. The intake is the plastic arm that goes from the MAF sensor to the intake manifold where the throttle body is. We talkin about the same thing? The stock design isn't super but it's more then adequate, there is more restrictive things in the intake tract I think.

Take a look at the intake on my Imprezza in the files section titled
impeng2.jpg oil sep. I checked the underhood temp on a hot day in
moderate traffic it was 177 F and under the fender it was 97 F I have
been told this temp drop was worth 7-10 hp and I believe it. I have a
friend that works for a company that could make a good intake somewhat
like this. I have been after him to make one for me for quite
sometime and if there was a demand maybe we could get some made. Like
taking good ideas and designing our own. The rubber boot on mine is
getting old and will probably give up soon. That is another reason to
replace the old intake.

I just cut the bottom of the air box off keeping the part that holds the
filter in. I will replace the filter with a K&N soon and make a wall to keep
out the hot air. What a noise and it flows great. It is very loud so if you
want to see how loud it is take the bottom of the air box off, remove the
filter and go around the block. If you decide to cut the bottom off make
sure you leave the bit that goes into the fender side that keeps it in place
and leave the mounting bolts there. I have not worked out how to stop the
hot air yet. Good Luck.

I've thought about doing this. I saw someone who did this, maybe it
was you. I still think the top airbox lid is not designed very well,
and has way more restriction than straight tube would. Thats why I'm
interested in a new system. Ideally it would be a cold air setup,
residing in the fenderwell. Although with a turbo this isn't as
important as with a NA engine because the turbo heats the air up so
much. Better to concentrate on ways to cool down the compressed
charge, i.e intercooling.

Yeah, I know. I unbolted the MAF from the airbox. Theres four 12mm
bolts holding it on to the airbox. So my setup had the MAF sensor as
the first part of the intake.

This all sounds familiar.

Heres my experince:

I removed the entire air box (very restrictive) from the engine bay
and snorkel (very silly) from the fender, and bolted a Pipercross
rampod filter directly to the MAF meter.(nice fit).

To get a nice flow of "fresh" air onto the filter replaced the
snorkel with air ducting made up from a straight section of 3" PVC
pipe (from local building store)in the fender with a 90 deg. bend
into the engine bay wall and a 30 deg. bend facing towards the fog
light opening(which has nice pressure). This setup seams to work
really well. The throttle response is greatly improved and the sound
is nice and deep, even with the stock resonator and turbo inlet pipe.
To follow this I will build a simple heat shield around the filter
area, made from a small sheet of aluminium, then a custom intake pipe.
I think I will go to a local engineering shop and get an intake pipe
made to suit, either of stainless steel or aluminium. It might work
out cheaper (approx.$50 NZ) than buying a ready made intake system.

If I had the choice and the cash though I would probably opt for a
silicon intake hose between the turbo and the MAF meter, made by
Samco or similar.

Yes but getting more cold air in the first place there is less to cool later
on in the intercooler. And yes it is very restrictive.
