Gearing question

Ok guys,
Got a few questions. I am trying to gather some info, to help me decide what direction to go in for my Legacy.
Question is mainly about the gearing in the Legacy. According to my manual the FWD legacies have a final gear ratio of 3.700, and the AWD legacies have a final gear ratio of 4.111. Now this is for my year. I'm not sure if it is the same for subsequent years. What do those numbers actually mean? In the physical world, driving characteristics, acceleration, top speed, all that good stuff.
I really like how my auto is geared now. Each gear increases in speed by 40 mph increments. I have good low end torque from start, and pulls pretty good all the way to red line. This gives me a technical top speed of 160 mph. She's pretty much pegged at 130 mph.
Since the auto's are only 4 spds, I'm assuming the gears are pretty tall gears, correct?
I met up with two other subie guys yesterday and they both have 5spds AWD. I let them both drive my car to see if they felt the tranny was not shifting up to par. They both said my car is a lot quicker then theirs'. Especially from initial take off. Mike has a 95 brighten, and Dave has a 00 outback.
My future plans could or am contemplating swapping in a 5spd, and possibly converting car to AWD. After talking with them about their cars, I am really thinking of re-evaluating my plans. Like I said, I REALLY like how the car is geared now. Again, according to my manual, the autos share the same ratios in gears, but the final drive ratio is higher. Does this make the car have better low end pickup, or high end speed? From what they have said about their subies when driving down the highway, it sounds like a higher final drive ratio does not mean higher top speed. I think they said their rpm's are around 3500 or something like that around 70 mph. I don't hit 3000-3200 rpm till about 90 mph.
I'll attach a copy of that page I scanned out of my owners manual.
So with all that sorta said.....what are your guys' recommendations and such. Do you think I'll be happy with the gearing or acceleration/power if I did do the swap. I don't want you to take into consideration the money or time in the project....just the gearing, acceleration/power aspects, and such.
If I determine that I will not be happy with the swap outcome. I will get my current tranny rebuilt, add a shift kit, and possibly LSD, additional tranny cooler, and run synthetic.
I really appreciate any help, insight you can give me.
Also should note.....there is a fairly decent possibility I will be adding a turbo kit from forced air inductions a year or so down the line once I get things sorted out with the transmission issues.....if that would change anyone's mind in either direction.
Thanks again.
Josh
