Tranny Issues Still....

Ok, well i still dont have 3rd gear. I am also on a college
budget. :-P so unfortunately i cant afford like a $3000 gearbox.
I'll do it in 2-3 years when i get out...but not yet. Let me just
ask this. Are there any tranny's I can just pull and plug from
another subaru? I am in the northeast United states....the chances of
me finding another turbo legacy gearbox are about as good as me
finding gold in my backyard. So does the 2.5GT legacy tranny work?
What are my options...frankly i'd like to keep it under a
grand...Plus I wont be running my 350HP until its a rally car (after
graduation) so in the meantime it'll only need to cope with probably
220 or so.
Thanks for any help you guys have!
-Andy

Go with Josh's reccomendation and call those guys. They're the ones
i'm getting the transmission swapover kit from. The reason i've not
disclosed their name is because i haven't yet received anything, and
i'd hate to recommend someone who turns out to be flaky.

If i remember right, you should be able to get a Turbo Legacy tranny
for $900, then perhaps another $200-250 shipping, then another $200-
400 to install it.

This is how it goes.

Oh, and if you could find a newer Legacy or Impreza tranny, it
*would* work, but you;d also have to replace the clutch assembly too,
because they're different. There are likely other minor differences,
but it's best to put in what you took out (now i'm being a
hypocrite :D)

Other issue too is gearing. Almost all of the US spec Legacy AWD trannies are 4.11 The turbo legacy had 3.9 in the early years I guess, and switched to 4.11 later. So you want to make sure you match up what you take out.

In Australia all RS turbo's were 4:11 with optional LSD.

Legacy RS RA's were 4:44.
and NA were 3:9 manual and 4:11 auto

Tranny Issues Still....

Posted: Fri Feb 01, 2002 2:55 am

Mark, I thought the older turbo legacies had 3.9 gearing. LSD was an option. I personally thought all turbo legacies had 3.9, but apparently some had 4.11, and I guess those were the later years.

In the info I have seen, all the N/A AWD Legacies had 4.11 gears. I guess some of the imprezas had 3.9 or 3.7 maybe...not sure. I know the FWD Legacies got 3.7 gears. That's what I have

Rod, you sure you got 3.9 gears in your former N/A wagon? Non of the manuals I have say it was offered with 3.9 gears.....they could be wrong though.

My `92 AWD auto tranny Legacy has 3.90:1 gearing without an LSD. It`s an "L" model without the rear sway bar, sunroof or leather. Did the turbos from 92-94 all have 4.11:1 gearing? Who knows for sure?---ROD (AZ.)

Other issue too is gearing. Almost all of the US spec Legacy AWD trannies are 4.11 The turbo legacy had 3.9 in the early years I guess, and switched to 4.11 later. So you want to make sure you match up what you take out.

OK.
Turbo legacies up to 94 had 3.9 diffs. Non-turbo awd automatics had 4.11 diffs.Non-tubo standards had 3.90, All imprezzas (I think) had 3.9 diffs, from 1999 on all had 3.9 LSD. All 93,94 turbo's had 3.9 LSD.
Correct me if im wrong...
NOW, did post 94 Subaru all come with 3.9 LSD or was it only on certain models that had LSD?
Oh, 1 note, Most EJ20T powered Liberty's have 4.11 diffs, some with LSD, some had 3.9, im not sure which had which. My homologation papers state that they had 4.11. I ended up with a open 4.11 diff from an auto, does anyone have a 4.11 LSD they want to sell?

Tranny Issues Still....

Non turbo 5 spds AWD were 4.11 I believe. Most, if not all of the N/A AWD trannies have been 4.11, didn't seem to matter whether it was auto or 5spd.

I know for a fact that in the 90 MY any AWD tranny was 4.11 gearing. FWD was 3.7 I believe in 91 with the introduction of the turbo legacy the 3.9 gearing was introduced. I've got some friends with newer legacies, one is a 95 AWD 5spd, the other is an 01 AWD auto, and they both have 4.11 gears.

It could just be a crap shoot, as to what they put in what........beats me.....

My rear diff has a tag on it that specifically states 3.90; I assume the front diff is the same. With std. size tires, I tach 3k rpm @ 85 mph-does this help? I can check for sure next time my car`s on the rack by: counting how many revolutions the rear shaft turns with just one wheel revolution, eg.-4x drive shaft to 1x wheel equals approx. 3.90 OR 4.11!!! Won`t this be fun!!!---ROD (AZ.)

Tranny Issues Still....

Rod, does sound like you have 3.9 gearing. My legacy has 3.7, and around 3000-3200 rpm I'm doin pretty much 90 mph on the button.

Do me a favor rod, look in your owners manual for your car, in the back there should be specs and such, and it should list the gear ratios available for that model year and for what options and such.

I have attached a scan of what the table looks like in my owners manual if that helps.

You may indeed have a rare legacy ;)

My rear diff has a tag on it that specifically states 3.90; I assume the front diff is the same. With std. size tires, I tach 3k rpm @ 85 mph-does this help? I can check for sure next time my car`s on the rack by: counting how many revolutions the rear shaft turns with just one wheel revolution, eg.-4x drive shaft to 1x wheel equals approx. 3.90 OR 4.11!!! Won`t this be fun!!!---ROD (AZ.)

I think what might be confusing is that some cars were converted. I
converted My Impreza to a 3.9 and almost all were 4.11 as far as I
know.

As far as I know all std trans. Turbos have 3.9 LSD all wagons had
4.11 I am not sure on the automatics. I do have a 4.11 LSD for sale it
is not a viscous drive but a clutch type with axel stubs. $200 +
shipping.

Tranny Issues Still....

I have a table at work with most transmissions Subaru made between 90 to 99,
I will check to see if it explains diff's. It lists chasis codes that the
transmissions went into.
I built it when I was looking for the correct transmission for my race car.

I think what might be confusing is that some cars were converted. I
converted My Impreza to a 3.9 and almost all were 4.11 as far as I
know.

Other issue too is gearing. Almost all of the US spec Legacy AWD trannies are 4.11 The turbo legacy had 3.9 in the early years I guess, and switched to 4.11 later. So you want to make sure you match up what you take out.
