Belt to water pump and AC

Hey tonight I had a very saddening expierience. My rusty but trusty 91
legacy wagon broke down. I was sitting at a stop light and started
smelling rubber smoke. I thought it was another car, and didn';t think
much of it. As I started to pull away from the intersection I noticed
that the temperatuer gauge was spiking really quickly. I pulled over
and got it shut off before the engine overheated too badly, opened the
hood, and out poored a cloud of aweful smelling smoke. after further
inspection I think what happened is that the belt to the water pump
siezed up after rubbing on something. now what is rubbing I have no
idea about. The pulley on the tensioner for that belt has been
squeeking slightly, I think that may be the culprite. AAA towed it to
the local shop where it's going to be fixed. anyone have this
expierience? are the tensioners prone to this? what's the deal?
thanks
Dave
