Clutch master cylinder "Dampener"

In swapping out my transmission, i was puzzled when looking at the
clutch master cylinder and finding this odd attachment on the bottom
of it. Looking in a service manual, i found out that it's called a
dampener, and it apparently reduces the vibrations and feel from the
hydraulic system.

Since they don't use these anymore on the newer models, is there any
good reason that i should leave it on? Could it be causing us to
have to extend the clutch farther than normal? It must have some
sort of buffer in it that's numbing the feel.

Has anyone bypasses or removed this thing?

Dave

If you are talking about that aluminum thing with the connections on
it I left it off when I installed the new flywheel and clutch in the
Impreza. I figured that it wasn't used anymore and that it would just
hold some more fluid to compress a bit and I needed all the travel I
could get with The ACT pressure plate. Everything seems to work ok but
have wondered a bit if I should have installed the thing.

I am indeed referring to that little aluminum thing attached to the
clutch master cylinder.

I have an upgraded clutch and pressure plate, and i'm barely
disengaging the clutch about a half-inch off the floor, so i think i
am loosing some of the effectiveness of the system by having the
dampener on there. Perhaps it's worn, perhaps the used MC is also
worn.

Does your clutch work as it should? I would like to remove or bypass
this and see if it does make any difference.

My clutch operates "normally" but it also will only disengage when the
pedal is at the floor and engages about a half inch from the floor and
that is without the little aluminum thing installed. We have had this
problem on a few late model Imprezas so I don't think it is due to
wear. I wonder if it is caused by the HD pressure plate ?? Anyone
else?

Ok, so at least i know that with or without the dampener, the
engagement point is very low. Perhaps an upgraded master or slave
cylinder, from a WRX or aftermarket company, could be used to cure
the weaknes...

I have found a slave cylinder that I think will help the problem, it
has a slightly smaller ID. This should give more distance to the
action of the slave cyl. for the same amount of master cyl travel. I
have to do a little machine work on this and will try and do it this
week. This problem also exists where the flywheel has been re-surfaced
and the TO bearing has to "reach" farther to disengage the clutch. We
had an Impreza with a re-surfaced flywheel that when reved in gear
moved a little.
