I am helping my friend to check out a Legacy turbo with A/T and 100K
miles. it's known that A/T on that car is prone to failure. How can
I make sure A/T is working properly during a test drive?

The 2-3 shift should be pretty snappy, if it's rather limp and feels
like it's slipping badly at full throttle, then it's getting worn. If any
shifts, up or down, seem to dwell before actually engaging, it's
another good sign of bad things.
