New struts

I've been checking the net for new strut prices and the best I can find is $65 a pop for GR2's at thepartsbin.com, with free shipping, for my old FWD. The same price @ replacementshocks.com, with free shipping, too. Anyone know of a better price, or have any experiences to relate with either of thes...

There are four "buttons" on the piece, and I assume that those are mounting points. I tried lifting gently around those but figured I had better ask before I did something stupid. Again.

Dumb question..

I have never had the plastic cover off the top of my engine and don't want to break something removing it. My manual says nothing but "remove cover." How is it done?

I just found a semi-local set of pristine WRX wheels with some pretty good tires that I can pick up at a bargain price. I'm all stock suspension on my '90 wagon. Should I expect any problems? From what I have read here, I don't expect any, but I'm just asking.

It quit compressing. I was hoping it was a leak in the system, but it just quit working. Bad news.

I tried a used/rebuilt unit and it was a POS, so I wound up having to buy a new one from my dealer. Ouch. I now know better--you can find new ones on-line for about $385 or so. I recommend a new unit if you want it to last more than a few months. I also converted to 134a, which is ok but not as cold...

Boy, do I feel lucky. I need a few dings removed, some touch-up paint, and some nice wheels to replace the old steelies. I have replaced the a/c comp, radiator, timing belt and all hoses recently, though. While the radiator was out it seemed like the thing to do. Also finally fixed the door lock.

I had a similar noise problem. The medical office that was erected next door to my house employs a bunch of illegal aliens to blow off their parking lot, and they ran gas-powered hedge trimmers, edgers and blowers starting at 6am on Mondays. I complained to them many times with no results. The illeg...

coil and ground questions

I've been watching this topic for a while, and everyone recommends new coils and ground wires for better performance. I'm running the original coil and grounds and don't seem to have any problems, but I don't drive in an area where there is snow or salt. Should I replace them or just not fix things ...

I guess I have been lucky, but will try the other plugs and filters and see if they make a difference. I've been pretty good about changing things on time and still get 30+ mpg on the road. Thank goodness, what with the new gas prices. I have a turd neighbor who bought an H2 Hummer with the "pi...

The best thing about being the original owner is that I know every single thing that has ever been done to the wagon, and I have performed all oil changes and tune-ups myself. I have always used the Bosch platinum plugs and Fram filters, but after absorbing some of the wealth of knowledge on the bbs...

Best car I have ever seen on cinder blocks in rural GA was a late '80's Jag XJ-6, and I saw it in the mid '90's. The body looked great, but there it was--all four rusty discs sitting on cinder blocks, right out there in the front yard. Guess the owners wanted folks to know they owned a Jag. I have a...

I'm sure the AWD is great for autocross. I haven't done that in years--I used to autocross a '59 Porsche 356A, and a '69 912. (Both were well used when I got them. I'm not THAT old.) I guess that's why I love 4 cyl. boxer engines so much. I will bet a nickel that your wagon is quicker that either of...

I put the door back together after my lock change, and tried to think of something temporary that I might fill the holes in the inside mirror gusset with to see if they contributed to the wind noise problem. I finally decided to use plumber's putty, since it will stay pliable, and if I have to remov...

My wagon still does 90 in third, and fwd works pretty well in S. GA where we rarely, if ever, see snow. (I would guess that every ten years or so we get a couple of inches that stick for a few hours.) And we never, ever, get salted roads to eat our cars. I look at some of the Legacy's for sale up no...

Of course I know that the parking brake cable goes to the rear brakes, I was just pointing out the silliness of the old Chilton's book. I really, really, would love to see a photo of your "plate on a screw," though. It might be a great tool for a lot of us. Thanks for replying, and for the...

Well, hell yes, we want pics! And perhaps an explaination as to why you were moved to do such a thing. I does sound like fun, though, except for the injury. As far as the white trash thing, does this happen near a really trashed mobile home with a dead major appliance or two on the front porch and a...

I'd love to see a photo of the "plate on a screw." It sounds intriguing. Chilton's also advises to "Release the parking brake and disconnect the cable from the caliper lever." And this is for changing the front pads. Hmmm. I am quoting these passages from a big hardback copy of &...

How did the ebay deals go? Did you get good deals and good cars? I have surfed around and watched some auctions, but never have bid on a vehicle. Most are located way too far from me. Just curious.

Re: Front brake pads. My old Chilton's says, "NOTE: Do not force the piston straight into the caliper bore. The piston is mounted on a threaded spindle which will bend under pressure." I, of course, had changed my front pads twice using a C-clamp and a small block of wood to compress the p...
