H&R springs

Post by entirelyturbo »

Just so everybody knows, the H&R springs featured on tirerack.com do not fit BC Legacies, at least the 4WD ones. I found this out after my whole rear suspension was apart, and I have to return the springs now!

Exactly!
the 91's have tapered springs, the 92-94 do not. so, yes, we that own a 92-94 legacy can use the H&R 4wd springs. :o

Well now i know, i didn't know that until the springs were out! :? So can I expect to find a 4-spring set from Whiteline that will fit or are you guys still discussing that? And if they don't, does anybody have experience modifying stock ones, cutting or anything? I know it's not the best idea, but I want my car lower more than anything else!

GC8 top hats...

Post by entirelyturbo »

So GC8 top hats will fit the body, strut, and H&R spring? You guys have said anything that fits an Impreza will probably fit a Legacy, so I guess it could work. I looked on the Teague's Auto site and they have MRT and STi top hats. Anyone know if those fit BC-BF's?

Ok,

How about springs from a wrx? Would they fit? Of course with the correct tophats?

Newer/cheaper the WRX guys are replacing them after 5K!

I wouldn't use the WRX stuff.....the suspension is different.

RS stuff should fit with the correct top mounts.

The H&R's should fit in the rear with the wider top mounts....

Whiteline makes springs that fit the legacies with the tapered rear springs.

The whiteline part #'s are

Control front - part# 74502
Control rear - part# 70368

Here are the top mount part #'s for the BC-BF Legacy

The fronts will work on all models

The rear numbers are only for the tapered springs

Front: ST2031055000
Rear Left: ST2032044000
Rear Right: ST2032044010

Then the dabate for me is whether to find a cheap set of RS springs, or go whole hog now and get springs and replace the old tops too.

I have KYB's on the way, and want to do this next month.

My gut feeling says, Whiteline, would you recommend replacing the tops too? or woud it be an area of slop I would replace later anyway.

So I am up to:

Rear arms for swaybar - my arms are rusted and toast.
Front and Rear AGX for GC8
Rear swaybar from Outback
New endlinks from 2000 Legacy - Mine already.
Front swaybar from 1999 Outback
New endlinks for front
Springs - ? Whiteline?
Tophats?

Brakes in the spring....

Motor in the fall....

Any one got a good used ej22T?

I'd probably recommend getting the harder top mounts if you are going to already have the stiffer struts....and looking at stiffer springs.

The whitelines seem like a decent choice. There are probably better springs out there. But were pretty much the only thing out there. My only complaint with the springs is that the left rear sits like an 1/8"-1/4" lower then the right rear.

I know....that's being very nit-picky....

Josh,

Thanks for your advice, I will be getting springs and tops too.

If I am getting tops, should I get the gc8 ones, or tapered?

STI tops or just new Subaru?

Are whiteline bars better than the Subaru Outback ones?

totech,

What year do you have?

Whiteline is the only spring manufact. that I know of that makes the tapered springs, yet they do offer the wider ones as well.

Look at what springs you are going to get.....then get the appropriate top mounts.

Whitelines are good springs....they are prob some others out there that are better.......get what works for you.

Get the sti top mounts.....z1 aka adambc5 gave me a good deal on them at $45 a piece......can't beat that anywhere.....I doubt OEM top mounts are goin to be much less.

The only difference between the whiteline bar is that it will prob be adjustable.....that's it.

again....I need to know what year car you have....that may present some issues with fitmant of the bar....but it shouldn't.

Josh,

I have 1991, with the old end-links, and plan on replacing the control arms to get the new link config.

FHI bars are cheaper by about $50 each, so I have the same reason, just adjustability.

STI tops it is..

My car has tapered, is there any reason for me to keep tapered if I am replacing the tops?

Thanks again!

Are those the NORMAL size/Offset large spring seats in hardened form?

Those are for the normal springs found on the 90-91 models, i.e. tapered springs.

I don't know the part number for the hardened top mounts for the fatter springs.

You should just be able to use the part numbers for the 94'ish and newer, and gc8 ones.

I think?

Are you sure these are correct? These are the part numbers they list in their catalog as the "flatout" model for a BD/BG Legacy. The "Control" model is the following:

Front Springs: 70198
Rear Springs: 70369

There is also a footnote which says:

"Check top and bottom ID of original spring. If top = 125mm & bottom = 141mm use 70369. If top = 95mm & bottom = 138mm
use 70368"

So which ones do us with 91s use?

Are the new STi rear springes tapered? I remember seeing a picture and they looked tapered, I think?? Maybe its to do with rebound/handling qualities??? Did the 90-91's handle better than the 92-94 Legacy?

As for the H & R springs, they fuk'd up on thier listings, it shows that the same spring set will fit for 90-94 Legacy's. Obviously we know that can't be, but its good that someone tried this out and that we all now know that they mean 92-94 Legacy, not 90-91.

I think all the rear springs are tapered, but some (90-91 legacy)moreso than others. I thought I remember reading that anyways

My part #'s are correct when I got my springs. I do not know if they are correct now. Apparently whiteline has been changing things, which is why the numbers are different and such.
