M3 versus Reddevil = Even Steven

Post by douglas vincent »

There is a nice on ramp to I-205 which I take all the time. Normally I am stuck behind people, or it has cars all over it.

Not today.

Come up and hit the stoplight. And a new M3 pulls up next to me......Sweet.... Light turns green and I take off, but not hard. Just enough to get me ahead of him normally. At 20 mph, I shift into 2nd and floor it. Off we go. At this time I didnt think the M3 was doing anything. But look in the rear view mirror proved me wrong.

The M3 is 5 car lengths behind and obviously trying to catch up.

But by the time I let off the gas since I am now on the freeway and a tad over 90, he NEVER gained a car length.

Then he did the ricer fly by

It used to be that I wondered if people "racing" me were not truly on the gas. But now I know they aren't. Why would you go "that" fast and NOT try to catch up?

Efffff, I need to get my intercooler piping 100%.

But if you think about it, that damn M3 would have to have HUGE power to start to catch up. He didnt start getting on it till at least 30 mph. How long does take to do 30-90? Not long. And he started at a disadvantage....

So he only had about 10 seconds to ""catch" me. On a slight uphill ramp. Gonna be hard.

He should have *some* advantage starting at 30 though, because he only has two driving wheels. Or at least it should be less of a disadvantage.

Have to add to this thread...

I was behind an E46 M3 (that's what the new ones are coded as Doug) convertible on my way home from work today, and the guy got on it at one point.

For the hell of it, I caught up to him, and rode his ass through a right-hand corner onto another street, he started trying to get away from me, and as he was making a VERY EASY sweeping left-hander, he almost lost it and almost took out a line of parked cars!

Once I saw he had regained control of the car, I laughed out loud to myself.

The guy was at least in his mid 40's too.

A lot of tools buy BMWs. I gave all the German cars in my novels to the bad guys (with the exception of a briefly mentioned 2.7 Carrera RS).
Midnight in a Perfect World on Amazon or order anywhere. The first book in a quartet chronicling the rise of a man from angry criminal to philanthropist. Midnight... is a distopic noirish novel featuring 'Duchess', a modified 1990 Subaru Legacy wagon.

Ok, the e46's are bad A cars. 3.2l 333 hp 262 lb/ft. Thats a lot of tuned machine right there.

- So I would venture to guess that Doug went up against an E36, which I have had the chance to drive before. Those are still really fast even tho they aren't making the same numbers as the newer ones. Good kill Doug.

But subyluvr, since you are saying you went up agains these new beast machines I am going to have to factor in a few things.
1 He was in his 40's so that means that he probably wanted luxury and comfort. So subtract points for having the convertible as that adds 366 lbs. not too bad but noticeable.
2 He was most likely granny shifting as is probably a good idea since that huge engine eats up 16-23 mpg driving normaly.
3 He was a crappy driver. (I have driven an E36, with not too much practice in rwd cars, I was able to stick corners at speeds higher than I thought possible, so it isn't that the car can't handle it.)

So basically with all that factored in, it amounts to you going up against someone in a honda civic.

e46's are pigs. They have power, but that's about it.

The e36 dynos at about 200whp.

For the most part, BMW drivers are douches and think that because they have a BMW they're cooler than other people.

The E46 M3's are bad-ass cars...

No offense, but you're kinda just reiterating my point :). I know an E46 M3 is volumes superior to my car in every way, shape, and form.

I just wanted to point out that the guy driving it (and 99% of the guys that drive E46 M3's in general) was a total asshat.
