GODZIRRA! 90 Legacy Wagon Project.
Hello all, I thought I'd post this here cause there might be some interest.
It's Time to revamp reeprise the legacy a bit. It has been a great little offroader and a good DD for me for a while. I have a bunch of other subies to drive now so this one goes under the kinfe. It has been setting for a while and I have not done any more to it because I have been busy on tons of other stuff. I was in the middle of a major rust repair job on it and decided that I have some new goals for this little bugger. So now what? This is my recent cent outline for this project.
Starting with a 90' Subaru Legacy wagon:
Already lifted 4 1/2" over stock running a Subaru HI/LO 5spd.
Goals for the rig:
1. Run a 35 13.5" tire on a 16" rim
2. Say Bye-Bye to the mcpherson strut suspension in favor of a double wishbone setup - front and rear. With long travel coil overs or nitro charged shocks.
3. Rear steering
4. Utilize a subaru engine(h6,), trans, diffs.
5. Secondary Xfer case ( suzuki samauri )
5.5 Using 1/2 ton 4x4 chevy knuckles front and rear
5.75 Custom Chevy/Subaru Hybrid axels
6. At least 14" more lift
7. Finish repairing body
8. Gut interior, Rhino line interior, custom Aluminum dash
9. Bulid half tube doors front and rear( making the stock doors still work for winter)
10. Build tube rear gate(makeing stock rear door still work for winter)
11. Be able to rock crawl/offroad and still take to car show and look good.
I got some pics for a starting point and some meausrements for comparison after it's done.
Measurements:
Rocker to floor clearance: 15"
Tire height : 27"
Lowest front point to the floor: 10" (exhaust)
Front bumper to floor : 23 1/2"
Rear diff to floor : 10"
Roof to floor : 61"
Front and rear wheel track(outside tires) : 66"
Interior:
Vid of motor running in case I sell it :
Couple teaser pics. Got some junk tires for mock up. 35 x 13.5 x 16.
So thats the start. This saturday I hope to have it down to a shell and then the fun begins.

Sorry for the blurry pics too.
The last one is so I can kinda get a perspective on what it's gonna look like or how high this will be to be able to utilize the tires.

Motor donor!
Pic and vid of said svx. She runs nice. Gonna be nice for Godzirra for sure.
Sound in the vid is bad power steering pump.
Honestly the easiest subie motor I have ever pulled. 3 hours and out without killinh myself.
Also tomorrow I want to "fit" the ea82 flywheel and get a template made for the D/R to EG33 adapter.

Yes it will be. The a arms themselves are not the hard part.
I have most of the numbers crunched based on what I want and several, several scale and non scale drawings...
I win. Most of the wiring is out of the svx. Now I can get it outta my way and start making some sparks!

Go solid axle and 4link it.When you are done you are just going to wish that you did after doing a buttload of shit that requires custom parts and breaks a lot,and forget about turning 35's with subaru drivetrain involved .Even though you are going with a transfer case and in theory will have good gearing-the fact is that the diff is where you want the reduction to take place, otherwise everything that comes before the diff is under a lot of stress,in this case 35" of stress. Some d44's or ideally landcruiser axles woulds suite you well.I may have a legacy but offroad is where my heart is...heres my other subaru by the way

I thought about solid axel for about 3 seconds.
It's too easy. This will be more unique, and should still work pretty well.
I am gonna start with lsd and welded 4.44 r160's but if they break I will stay with independant. I have been looking at ford 8.8 independant rears too.

Fair enough, but yeah use another diff type.I would find something that will allow you the option of easily finding different ratios.even though you can get down to 4.4 to 1 with suby stuff the parts just wont take the forces. You have a lot of fab to do-make it work the first time.

I have not really seem much where guy running 31-33's have broken diffs.
They usually break axels and stubs. I have fixes for some of that.
Changing from a subie diff to another independant diff won't really require any chassis changes so for price I was gonna try the subie diffs and see what they could take.

I was just going to suggest the 8.8, but it looks like you have that covered. If I ever find the limits of the R180 on my street car, it will get an 8.8.
And yeah, building the A-arms is the easy part. Modifying the unit-body to accept them in a durable fashion will be the painstaking part.

The r200 is also an option but for the price difference and avaliablilty the 8.8 iRS unit is the way to go.
I will not really be using the unitbody on the car at all. In fact most fo the front is coming off in front of the firewall.
I will build a chassis and then basically bolt whats left of the legacy body to it. I will rehang the fenders and front core so I can place the lights and grill and hood.

Not every day you see someone take a turbo legacy and pull the motor for an SVX motor and then use it for offroad. Looks like fun.
Where did you get that washer fluid resevoir?

Oh nevermind. I guess I skimmed over the pictures too quick and through that was the legacy engine bay.

Got the ea flywheel and old clutch and pp mounted. Bolted right up.
Test bolting the motor and trans to see whats needed.
I also got some plate to make the adapter. I got the template made as well. I had to rough cut the plate it with the torch. Just need to clean it up and drill some holes.

Re: GODZIRRA! 90 Legacy Wagon Project.
Well, progress has been slow but.
Body and frame become 1.
I got two rear mounts made and bolted on. The car needs to go up a bit further... But it's starting to look like something.
Obviously the frame rails are not done but a good start.
The adapter plate is done except for drilling the holes.
I did decide to go with for 8.8 irs diffs. The cost and strength are worth it and gear ratios and locker choices are cheaper and more plentiful too.
After next week my parts pile should be growing. List iof stuff is both diffs and 4 axels, zooki x fer case and all 3 driveshafts, 16x10 rims, body bushings, and also bushings fro the upper and lower a arms.

Re: GODZIRRA! 90 Legacy Wagon Project.
Well, I'm back. I have pretty much sold all fo my other projects. I have just the legacy, and the 02' wrx, and a truck now. I could not concentrate on this and this is where my heart is at. Visually there is nothing changed really. I don't have tons of time so this goes in spurts.
I have made some changes to the drivetrain and this basically started over and made more difficult everything that i had already figured. I am going to be using a THM 350 automatic chevy trans and transfer case. With 8.8 locked 5.13 geared diffs. Still staying independant susp though.
Here are some recent pics.
The THM350, xfer case in the back ground:
The "hub": All machining done by me. Tons and tons of hours...
Hub in place;
Motor side:
Trans side:
Mini High torque offset starter, universal mount:
1st attempt (10 min) at cutting with the plasma cutter, header flange. Needs cleaned up but not bad for 10 min.
New toy:
Got the adapter plate all cut out and cleaned up. I have to cut out the center yet and get the holes drilled and trim what i don't need. Good day though.
Starting out:
In process:
Almost done:
All in all it took about 10-15 mins to cut out. YAY!
:eek:OH NOES! I has erl leak!
Had to clearance the oil pan to fit the starter.
Still needs cleaned up and leak tested but I am getting there. I'll do some more cutting on the adapter later this week.
Couple of my scale blueprints. I have quite a few so far...
Rear of motor:
Motor/trans/flywheel overlay:
This is some of what is taking a lot of time. It helps a lot for quick reference on measurements...
The blueprints are not perfect by any means. It's been ten+ years since I took any classes and really this is the most I have done all at once. I usually just do it for fun.
This is an oldskool way to do it for sure. Most would just "cad" it now, and in fact i still should but... I still like paper and pencil.
I also got all the holes drilled and tapped in the adapter plate for the trans side. I don't have pics of that. It's just holes. LOL!
So thats where i'm at. No where near what I wanted done but progress none the less. Things will hopefully move faster once I get the motor and trans together and get them located so I can start building the chasis and onto the suspension.

The garage has been a dream of mine since I first worked on a car in the dead of winter, outside, with tarps for cover, and a salamander running.
It took a lot of overtime $ and tons of hours...

3/4 Plate. It's an 80 amp Thermal dynamics cutmaster 100. Works great! When I cut some more of the plate this week I'll take pics of how nice of a cut it makes. Makes a torch cut look retarded.
