Was thinking abut bulding my dohc heads a little.

Post by cj91legss »

I've got some EJ20H heads i'm going to be putting on my 22t block soon and was thinking i would like to maybe get some aftermarket cams.

i searched and didn't find out what was a direct drop-in so what i wondering is would aftermarket cams from a wrx drop in?

If they are really EJ20H heads, they should have the hydraulic HLAs under the cam buckets. If so, you can use EJ20G WRX cams, also with the HLAs.

+1, Delta is the place to start unless you got deep pockets.

when i talked to Delta aboutmy 22t cams, the wanted 94 bucks a piece.. i suppose the price could be adjusted since there's 4 but im thinking still 350-400 to have my cams done. that's pretty pricey.

As far as HLAs yes i have HLA

If they are a phase one cam, your only aftermarket cam option is Kelford, for over $1100. They also require springs, valves, and other stuff adding up to over $1500 for that stuff. So, without porting, you are creeping up to $3k.

I'd look into Delta if you don't use an OEM cam.

If you have a Dremel and some spare time, start porting/polishing the heads... Make your own RS-RA heads. I did the head on my diesel VW motor, took a days worth of work. Use the metal toothed carbide bits for the heavy removal., then smooth it out with the sanding drums. You can do most of it with the main drill, but if you have a flex shaft it's a lot easier.

Are the intake manifold bolts in a straight line, or not. That should answer your question. Straight line is phase one. All else is not.

Do you really have something to control this with? Unless you do you won't get the beni's. Engine management, Tuneable ecu? I'd just save up for a WRX engine/obdII harness swap. Then you can get Access Port...and bob's your uncle.

Good luck!

A friend of mine was doing this on his rabbit with a 2.0 8v head he had. i've heard some stuff about doing this yourself. Matching the intake ports to or very close to the opening of the gaskets themselves. what i don't fully get is wouldn't you only get real gain if you went thru all the way to even open up the intake valve seats and run bigger valves?

No im not running any kind of management right now, nor do i have the funds to buy management. I was however thinking about trying to get a 20g ecu off ebay when i could, or... (lets hope it's still worth it) revtronix. either way i have to do something about management of some sort in order to use my 550 sti sidefeeds.

I wouldn't do any mods based on getting a RT chip right now. Wishful thinking until that guy resurfaces. Hold on and save your dough for one big deal i/o of piddling it all away. OBDII and Access Port...repeat after me...<grin>

For an economical option, you could have only the intake cams reground for a small bump in power. The first step over a stock grind usually works with stock EM, but would be better exploitable with programmable management.

So, the long and short of it is you don't have a way of tuning the car, so you are wasting your time.

You should focus on tunability, before anything else. Until you can adjust for changes in VE, you are wasting your time.

Volumetric Efficiency.

In a small nutshell, the ECU (even MAF based ones) wxpects the motor to breath air in a certain way. The more you change the airflow/RPM/TPS ratios, the harder it is for the ECU to cope. MAP based vehicles are really screwed, our MAF based ECU do better, but there is a limit.

The swap to DOHC heads already puts the ECU into severe "try to learn mode", porting on top of that can push it over the edge.
