OK, I broke it.

Post by douglas vincent »

The power steering pump that is. Ripped the shaft right out. I even got it on video. I was in a snow park up on MT Hood, had parked and videod a couple other wagons doing donuts. Then my turn. Got in the car, started it, got on boost and it broke instantly but I didnt know it until about 2 power slides 4 seconds later. On the video you hear the SC then a horrible banging flapping sound.

Never trust aluminium to hold a bolt. Especially small bolts. I should have backed up the bolts with nuts instead of just threads in the pulley.

The pulley came slightly loose from the core of the original powersteering pulley it was "bolted" to. With that slight play all hell broke loose. The shaft of the powersteering pulley then shattered the front of the powersteering pump and yanked the shaft clean out and shredded one belt pretty good.

And of course I didnt bring a spare belt to just drive the altenator. So I had to drive on just the battery down the mountain until the battery gave up the ghost. Luckily my brother was home so he drove out and saved me and we picked up a belt in Sandy and I was able to drive it back to the shop.

After I got back to the shop, I remounted the step pulley back onto the powersteering core AFTER I bent parts of it back into shape. It was pretty ugly looking. Then I had to return the pulley again. I am running out of metal to turn! I actually do need to turn another pulley now because of all these trial and ERRORS!

So 2 1/2 hours later, I was back on boost. But I was ragged and tired. oophhh.....

And.....I have a horrible knock/tapping sound now that won't go away. I have always had a tapping/knocking sound, even since I rebuilt the motor with new pistons and rings back in September, but it always went away after warming up. I don't know if it is the valve train (I hope) or rod knock. I am about 90% sure it is NOT because of the 10 psi of boost I was running since yesterday because the sound wasn't there this morning (or was it?) but rather since I strained the belt system so hard I destroyed the pump.

While fearful for the bottom end, I guess I will just have to give it some boost and see if it holds up. If it breaks, well, thats what the donor motor is for.

Why does power cost so much money and time?
