Touring Wagon tackles the White Rim

Post by ashergrey »

The White Rim is a 100+ mile 4x4 trail through the Island of the Sky district of Utah's Canyonlands National Park. Primarily carved by uranium miners in the 1950s, it runs through one of the most barren and desolate landscapes in the lower 48 states.

I'm sure I'm not the first to take a Subaru around it, but it's certainly not the friendliest place for any vehicle without a low range and a lot of clearance.

That's a pretty cool trail, looks like a scenic drive. I use to live in UT, in Layton outside of Salt Lake, and I always wanted to go check out the canyons and rock features but never made it.

Looks like a challenging and fun drive! I miss doing that kind of off-roading.

Challenging, physically punishing on a street car suspension and even a little terrifying when driving along sheer drop-offs into canyon bottoms.

Worst section was actually a high-speed run through deep snow and mud toward the end on the Mineral Canyon Road. Had to keep speed above 40 to avoid bogging but ruts kept trying to throw the car off the road. Here's how it looked at the end, when I stopped on pavement to air the tires back up.

I'm glad the road didn't give out on you. Looked pretty good down there.
