Head gasket replacement parts/tool list.

Cant find it in the search.... I have a '91 ej22 engine in my VW van. The head gasket(s) need replacing. Besides the head gaskets do I need anything else to do the job? Bolts? Guess I'm looking for a parts and tools needed list. I will be replacing one crankshaft gasket. Timing belt has only 20,000 ...

What is this oil catch can? Never heard of it. Where would it be installed?

Re: Blue-ish grey smoke at start up

Those numbers look alright. Any oil from the PCV system would not likely pool unless things are not plumbed properly, or you just have A LOT of oil or bad PCV valve. Bad valve seals may let oil seap onto the valves. What kind and weight oil are you using? I am using 10w-40. How can you test a PCV v...

Blue-ish grey smoke at start up

I have a '91 EJ22 engine installed in my '89 VW Vanagon that is blowing some smoke at start up. It doesn't happen every time. The engine was rebuilt a couple of years ago and maybe has 15-20,00 miles on it. The compression has been checked and results were - #1 - 142 #2 - 137 #3 - 145 #4 - 134 Keep ...

Oil in the IAC valve.......What!?!?!

I have been dealing with an ever worsening idle problem that I narrowed down to the IAC. So I pulled it off to replace it and found a pool of oil on the intake manifold side of where the IAC mounts. This, I assume, is not normal. Where did this come from and what do I do to fix it? My guess is the P...

Some say not to clean this style. WHY? Since it is not recommended to clean it, what are the options for helping it work better?

Cleaning a '91 IAC valve

the rotor valve IAC valves are ok to clean....or at least they were ok to clean when I did mine. The recipricating valves are probably better off not cleaned....or something... Are '91 EJ22 (manual tranny) reciprocating valve style IAC's? Why would you not want to clean this style of IAC? What are ...

Purge Control valve Solenoid

I doubt that it would, but have to ask............ From what I gather, the purge control solenoid does NOT effect the performance of the engine. Is this correct? Can a bad purge valve solenoid cause a vacuum leak? Thus be the cause of a bad fluctuating idle issue I have been dealing with. My '91 EJ2...

Do rebuilt engine heads need to be retorqued?

'91 EJ22 Legacy

After a complete engine rebuild, should the head bolts be re-torqued after a certain period of running time? If so, what is the recommended torque and in what order should they be done?

Many thanks for the help

The IAC valve on the MT ECU's only have one PWM signal sent to the IAC valve to I believe close it. There's a spring in there to cause it to open. On the AT cars there are two PWM signals sent to the IAC valve. One to open the valve, one to close. This provides more precise control of the IAC valve...

Finding a replacement IAC valve or bypassing it

I have a '91 Legacy with a NA EJ22 and manual tranny installed in my VW camper and is in need of a new IAC valve. This is no longer available through the dealership so I am stuck with used. Finding a used IAC from a manual donor is proving difficult. Is it possible to use one out of an automatic tra...

Does your TB have a bypass adjustment screw on the top of it? http://main.experiencetherave.com/subaru/images/TB/ If it does, you may want to adjust that. Also, the IAC valve for the MT motor isn't as good as the IAC valve for the AT motors, so as you mentioned, something may have been stretched wh...

It might. As long as everything is in good shape, it should, but as with anything, there's no guarantee. Does it die or is it idling really high or is it just hunting, but drivable? It idles smoothly at 1000-1125rpms and is quite drivable now that the cyclical idle is gone. FYI - For some reason, w...

The noise was definitely not normal. I said "was" as I think I solved the problem. I took off the solenoid on top of the IAC valve housing. Pushed the shaft (that goes into the housing) up and down while shooting carb cleaner into the air intake of the IAC. This seems to have fixed the noi...

Actually I should have mentioned that I was originally trying to fix a cyclical idle problem by shooting carb cleaner in the intake of the IAC. I did remove the solenoid part of the IAC to actuate the shaft up and down while I blasted its innards. The engine is recently rebuilt and all vacuum hoses ...

Adjusting idle on a '91 Legacy EJ22

From all the reading i have done, it seems that in order to adjust the idle you need to turn the solenoid on top of the IAC and NOT the throttle stop screw on the throttle body . On my '91 EJ22 (installed in a VW camper) the IAC solenoid has only one possible position. In other words, there are no s...

Noise from the IAC....WTH?

I have a '91 Legacy EJ22 installed in my VW vanagon. Idle has been fluctuating and sometimes stalling. My thoughts are the IAC valve, solely because there is a funny fan like sound coming from it. When it is silent, then engine's idle fluctuates. Idle will smooth out when the funny noise is present ...
