I can't really complain about my computer though, COUGH! dual processor Xeons at 3.06 Ghz each, 3 GB of ram, Nvidia Quadro FX 3000, lots of GB's worth of hard drive space COUGH! although it would be nice to have access to all of my RAM.

It sucks having to keep up with computer stuff, especially when my life after college will revolve around the leading technology. Stupid art school...

You and Laurel both. She's going to resist having to buy a Mac for her graphic arts career to the last breath, me thinks.

Hmmm... I don't think technology seems to be the problem here. I think the problem is getting a hold of the concept "being satisfied".

You don't really want to be on the bleeding edge of technology. They call it a bleeding edge for a reason. You're gonna get cut and burnt eventually. I pitied my one college professor... he bought a calculator way back in the day, that cost 1/4 of what a Corvette cost at the time. He bought a (~$12,500 today) calculator that could do square roots. :? What does he have to show for it? Nothing, he just looks like an idiot continually buying all the newest and greatest things that show up on the technological front. Patience yields all kinds of good fruits.

Don't worry. In 20 years your kids will straight up laugh at you when they find out how much you paid for a machine that could barely do what their pda does.

Is building your own laptop feasable? I built my desktop (a looong time ago).

Heh, the last time I built a computer was nearly 2 years ago or so. My parts were pretty good at the time. Best overclockable Athlon XP at the time. To this day it still does what I need it to. Sure, it shows its age, but anymore I don't need the latest and greatest. I'm even considering downgrading and selling my current internals to buy stuff for my car, or pay the ticket I got for driving my friend's Impreza uninspected :x

As for building a laptop, I'm not sure but I don't think it's possible. I could be wrong on that though, I haven't really read up on computer crap like I used too in like 2 years or so. Had a lot going on...

Hmm, I don't have any problems using this pIII 500Mhz machine I've had for years.
But then, I don't do any gaming. The latest and greatest machines are faster than what most computer users need for regular office/internet tasks. 64-bit processing would not be an advantage though unless you're ray-tracing massive scenes or working with data sets over say ...4Gb.

The only thing really driving pc performance is gaming. I'm sure at some point the game developers will take advantage of the 64 bit stuff and the game's will be better still.

Two words:
Nucular Simulation.

I need a ps2, make that a FLEET of ps2s, and a stable linux kernel. oh, and a keyboard, cause I'm elite, but not enough so that I can telekinetically put the characters on the screen.
