Blown head gasket?

Post by 91White-T »

This morning I moved the ole wagon to clear the snow, and what do I see but significant coolant droplets underneath, a check of the oil revealed the milkyness I was sure would be there. I suspect the pass. side HG, but it could be something else. It did feel slower than usual the other day... We'll see how long it will drive with whatever it has.

Maybe you should stop buying 91 Legacy's? Seem to have a bad bit of luck with them...

I've been watching your posts, and frankly, they worry me. I can smell burning coolany coming from my '91. It was recently resealed though and even though these things can be sudden they didn't mention anything at that time. I've never checked my oil for milky whiteness, I guess I had better do so.

I find it's more likely to show itself in the coolant than the oil, but that's not always.

I checked my oil and there's no frothiness. I haven't looked at my coolant yet but I'm not sure what I should be looking for there, I'm guessing it's oil. There were times that I looked at my coolant in my NA and noticed that there was a dark oily discoloration. I wrote it off as radiator residue.

you are looking for a oil "rainbow" floating on top of the water / glycol. There may also be tiny oil droplets, and it will tend to leave an oil scum ring on a container that you catch it in.

If you let it sit the oil will float to the top

Look for the same thing. If the coolant looks milky then there is a problem. Check it in the coolant tank. :)

Thanks all.

My NA left scum rings in the coolant reservoir. I flushed it once and cleaned out the tank. Later on it reappeared. This was a while ago and I've driven it and driven it hard since, no real troubles yet. If it needs one then either I'll be doing or it will be a parts car.
