OK, we have two types of bolts that are meant for the timing belt covers. Some have that shoulder and some do not. I think that all the ones with the shoulders are meant to hold on the center section and the ones without the shoulder are meant for the end caps. I have a pile of these bolts that have the shoulder and not enough places to put them. And I'm short on the ones without a should that hold the end caps on. Does someone know what goes where? I dont know where all these extra bolts with the shoulders go I have two books and they do not offer enough detail, any help would be very good.
Thanks, Mike

I'm talking about the bolts that hold the front covers to the back covers. The back covers being the ones attached to the block and heads. What I mean by the bolts is some have a thicker "shoulder" on them to keep them from being screwed in too deep. Basically the thread does not go all the way up to the head of the bolt. I know this is a tough question.

it actually does make a difference. That's why there are two different bolts.
BUT, which one goes where i don't recall at the moment.
Back when i did my head gaskets i was working at a subaru dealership. After getting done putting the gaskets in, i took it in to get looked at.. The service techs said the only thing i did wrong was putting the bolts in the front cover.
I know that this question is borderline stupid, but please bare with me here guys. I'm not a total retard, I am just confused because I took the whole motor apart and I do not recall seeing this type of bolt ANYWHERE else on the whole motor. I basically have extra bolts with the shoulder and not enough without. The ones with the shoulder are meant to go on the center section. they bottom out on the block before crushing the cover. I'm only confused because I have like 13 or 14 of this syle bolt and only 7 or 8 places that they will fit. They dont fit in the end covers because that shoulder or step in the bolt is a larger diameter. I am going to the dealership and just going to buy all new bolts. I'll let you guys know what I find out. Sorry for this dumb post.

Don't worry Mike. I didn't think much of the two different types of bolts when I did my timing belt, but when I put the timing covers back on, I realized that the shouldered ones won't go just anywhere...
Thusly, my passenger cam cover is missing a bolt as we speak (or post ), and I don't really feel a need to worry about it or fix it...

I went to the dealer today at lunch. I bought the shorter bolts that hold on left and right side covers. I think it was 7 or 8 total at about 40 cents a piece. I really dont know where the extra bolts came from that i have but I'm sure I'll find out at some point. Thanks guys

Whaaaaaallaaaaaaaa. I think you got it! I dont have my valve covers on yet and that would explain the extra bolts. You guys are awesome, although I'm sure I would have found out when I attempted to put them back on . I'll have to post some pics of them, I brought them into work and milled the round ribs and the subaru writing down flat and polished just the ribs and the letters the rest I painted red. I also painted the intake manifold red too. I thought I'd go for some custom STI look or something.
