General Fitments?

Post by tris91ricer »

Okay, I thought we had this concensus that all EJ engines bolt right up to all EJ trannies. From different things I've heard, this may not be true, esp when it comes to Turbo and NA trannies.
I'm still looking for a used AT, and I have a lead on one, but I'm going to need to know for sure what the differences are between ATs of the same model year. Put simply, I want a turbo AT in my NA, in preparation for an eventual SC project. I really don't want my tranny to give out again.
So.. anyone have it straight? I can understand if the gear ratios aren't the same, which may or may not mean a rear-end swap as well, but this is something that's been on my mind for awhile now.

See, that's what I thought, but Laurel and I were talking about that this weekend, and she said she knew of someone that had some real difficulty in fitting a turbo trans to an NA.. something about the bellhousing, but that would mean that the engine was a different design, in order that the bellhousing be different.
So.. of the same model year, the ratios should be the same between turbo and NA, right?

Thanks Josh!

Trust me....it works....I've got a turbo tranny mated to a n/a motor. The only thing I can think of would be the change that happened where the engine/trans were held together with 6 bolts/studs rather then 4 bolts and 2 studs. But even then, it'll still work just fine since the 2 studs are in the same location where the extra two bolts go.

Who does she know? Are we sure it wasnt just them having problems lining it up? What year was the trans and engine? They may have had extra holes or less holes depednig on the years but it would have bolted on just fine.

Oh great, there's holes now?? Holy moley, there's too much to deal with!
What years did the holes change? How is this remedied/fixed/modded?

Ummm, it's just like josh said above. There's no real differnce. The point is any of the new gen subaru engines adn transmissions will bolt to each other.

umm, you can use any EJ/EG/EZ tranny on your engine. You just might have extra holes on the bellhousing. nothing to be worried about. I believe they started with the new type in 98 for legacy's and outbacks and in 99 for imprezas and foresters. butI could be wrong.

We are only talking about fitment, not anything about will it work, will the gearing match, etc.
