Getting the itch...
I'm getting the itch to start playing with the motor. I think it's mainly the itch to start researching everything and try to hone the path I want to take. There's a hell of a lot of stuff out there, and a lot of info....it's sifting through all the crap and finding the good stuff.
The goal of the engine buildup is to have a nice fat table top torque curve in the 300 range.....it's just figuring out exactly how to do that reliably and without breaking the bank.

The Bug is a love-hate relationship. You love it, your wallet hates it.
It's pretty hard to get around the 300 number, and maintain reliability and cost efficiency.
You know the old Mantra: "Fast, Cheap, Reliable. Pick two"
I'm currently in the quest for a bit more power than that, and I have been getting a TON of conflicting information and it gets pretty confusing pretty fast.

300? Wow, do you realize how quick your car would be with 220 to the ground?
And NA or FI, the key is engine management. You can't get around it if you want to do it right. And with OBD1, stand-alone is the only option. So first, figure out what kind of management you want. With that alone, you could probably get your current setup over 200 at the fly.

On your original block Josh? Not saying it's out of the question, I think open-deck EJ22 blocks have more potential than we give them credit for.
William, not trying to be rude, but I don't know how you can possibly get any numbers close to 300 without forced induction of some kind. The strength in the engine is there, but the aftermarket support isn't. I've never seen anyone do a crazy Subaru NA build.
I've definitely got the bug too, I just don't know how I'm going to go about it. Both of my cars now are staying and staying stock, they're cream puffs not race cars. I've got to find a car I can build from scratch, and then I've got to find the finances to do so.

I put almost 220 to the ground, and now I just want more.
The bug just gets more and more expensive as you go.

I guess I should have clarified.
I'm talking about a complete buildup of some kind....more then likely an EJ22t block....FI for sure...and definitely stand alone engine management.
First thing I need to decide on is the block, ej22t, or the sti block...and if I went with the ej22t...whether to stroke the motor for more displacement....
There's definitely A LOT to research....and a lot to figure out. I know myself...and I know better then to actually start doing the research until I have the money to fund it

You could be like a certain board member *cough*, and build an EJ22T to EJ257 specs. Keep oil squirters and closed deck.

Sort of. Still working out the details. I will still be using the Ej22t block though.

You can't on 2.2L, barring F1 technology. You need at least 3 Liters. And with any kind of build like that, most everything is custom. But anyways...subyluvr2212 wrote:I don't know how you can possibly get any numbers close to 300 without forced induction of some kind. If you want a really fat torque curve with lots of power, don't forget that that is what the 2.2t was built for. You could easily get 300 wtq over a broad range. The SOHC and the larger displacement and the small turbo all made for a tremendous torque curve. With a larger turbo and EM and supporting bolt ons, then I think you will have what you want, and it will be much cheaper than sourcing EJ257 parts.
As for displacement, I don't know what I'd do. I'm thinking I would just rebuild my engine just like it was and focus on tuning and the correct turbo. With stroking, you increase the piston velocities for the same RPM... so I don't know if you would feel comfortable increasing the rpm, and so that would cut into power making abilities. Boring is kept pretty minimal, unless you want to get into re-sleeving, once again that would seem a little messy for my tastes.
Just bouncing ideas off your head. I think it would be tidiest to just beef up anything necessary in the bottom end, clean up the heads a little, then get to tuning. Trying to swap parts into the bottom end seems a little complicated unless you have an absolute kick-butt engine builder.

Yeah...I think your right. I do think the subaru bottom ends are pretty good. I'd probably look at a lighter/stronger set of rods/pistons possibly.
I'd probably have a subie engine builder, build me a short block, and then I'll assemble the rest. I could probably assemble the short block myself, but it's one of those things. If you have someone that really knows their shit, why not let them do it, especially if it's critical and farking something up is easy.
Like I said....I don't know what I want to do....so yeah....keep the ideas bouncing.

EJ257, EJ207, or EJ255. That's the route you should take. There's more to big hp than how the deck is made.

Gotta have a firm foundation, and since EJ engines are pretty similar in build.
Choose the block.
Choose the heads.
Choose the internals.

Hey Phil,
Just curious....what are all the mods you have. I know you posted in the subiesport thread that they didn't list all your mods.

Everything listed in Subiesport is pretty much all of the major stuff.
They just left out little things like the intake, K&N, battery in the trunk, BOV. Nothing major performance wise. Just the little things. Interior stuff, exterior stuff, stuff like that.
