What should I get?

Post by legacy92ej22t »

My wife just got a new job and she'll be commuting around 80 miles a day sooo....the Tahoe gots to go! I want to get something that can carry my whole family but at the same time gets good mileage, so I'm thinking either a Legacy wagon of some sort, maybe an Outback or another Forester. I'm wishing we would have just kept the Forester S that we had but oh well. I love the Tahoe too, it's roomy and super comfy, has a great sound system and carry all sorts of shit but it's a gas hog and isn't really good for mommy earth or my wallet. Especially since the payments are high on it too.

So what would you guys get? I'm very open to suggestion. I'm a Suby lover though and like the fact that I can work on them myself so that's why I'm already leaning that way.

Oh, I'd really like to find an old Touring wagon or GT wagon. My wife needs an auto but I need booooost! :D

Yup. Those. Even my retarded friend who works at the wash bin at the dealership says they're tight. He and another dude raced 'em up and down the 50mph stretch the dealership's on. They 'got gas' pretty quick.
..Then again, they're the douches that roast clutches and put too many 'test miles' on the cars that come thru there. Hehe, he gets tired of my lectures on that.

I like any of your ideas... Basically any Subaru wagon should be good.

I think you should consider for a minute whether you really want boost though. It does add noticeably to the cost, since you have to buy premium fuel -- which you burn faster -- and you'll want to use synthetic lubricant -- which you'll want to change more often -- and stuff like that.

A first-generation Legacy wagon seems like it'd be the most cost-effective option, and it'd be great to have your two cars be nearly identical. But it's not like any two modern Subarus are ever very different.

I guess you kinda have to lay out a budget first, since a first-generation BJ/BF is a completely different beast from a 2004 Forester XT in terms of finance.

Ya, thanks Laurel and Tristan but the F-XT isn't an option for me. That wouldn't drop my payment enough. Besides, I'd probably just get a new GT wagon if I was going to spend that kind of coin. :)

I know what you're saying Vikash but it would be so cool to have a BC and a BF turbo! Especially if they were both '92's. Hehehe. ANything is going to be better then the Tahoe in the gas department but ya, premium only can be a bitch when it's $2+ a gallon. :(

If I did get a Touring or GT wagon it would have to be in really good shape and relatively low miles to work out though. My wifes not really "into" these cars so it would have to be very clean for her to go for it probably.

A nice Outback would be cool though too. Ooh, ooh, an H6 Outback would be sweet. They might be a little harder to find though.

Like I said, I'd rather get down with a Suby but I could maybe handle a 4-Runner or Pathfinder too. A V6 would be better then the 350 at least.

The V6 SUVs aren't much better since they have to work harder and they're still big bricks. Subarus are generally among the poorest in terms of gas mileage for their class, but there's got to be some sacrifice for superiority.

The last thing you need is an EZ30. I'm not joking when I say I've seen maybe 3-4 different ones that weren't leaking oil. (I usually do one or two h6's a day).

What is your price area? I'm sure it changes with cars, cause obviously you wouldnt want to spend 5 grand on an NA or something. In all seriousness though maybe she should get a civic or something small and good on gas. What about a miata?

Matt, W&L has 2 2002s you might be intereted in, an auto Legacy wagon, and an Outback VDC wagon. They all have milage in the 40k range. It might be worth it to check them out, they're good people there even when disregarding the fact that they almost persuaded pops to get me a WRX last time we were in.

what about a mk 4 jetta TDi wagon? kinda rare anyway, probably really rare with a AT. not sure if that would be in your budget too. however, you cant beat the gas mileage and torque. Ive driven a mk3 jetta TD(I bet the mk4 is even better), that low end torque is way fun and they are a lot quieter than what you'd expect. plus if you want power mods, a TDi wont disapoint. great engine. \
as for a subaru, I'd look for a mid-late 90's legacy GT wagon. the leather interior on those is seriously sweet. my dad is in the market for one of those, we test drove one and I liked it quite a bit. should be no problem finding an AT car.

Well yeah I know you're not replacing your car. I'd say a legacy or outback then, 00-04.

LMFAO! Phil, dude, he was always up at my father in laws house when you and Vikash were here. Trust me, there would not have been enough room for you and V if he were here. He's probably one of the bigger dogs you'd ever see besides a Great Dane or ST. Bernard! His name is Chinook and he's a hybrid. I've actually had him for 9 years. If Scott notices this post maybe he'll attest to Chinooks greatness. :D

Hybrid wolf? A friend of mine had one with the max percentage of wolf you could get legally, but it looked 100% wolf with the eyes and everything. Real nice dog, but scary as a mother. First time I met it was laying down in the back seat of his Chevelle and it jumped up at me when I approached. Almost left skid marks.

Yes, hybrid Wolf. He's 77% Wolf (Silvertip and Alaskan Grey) and 23% Husky. He actually has super pale blue eyes. He's one of the most mellow, laid back dogs ever though and is super smart. He's also one of the fastest dogs I've ever seen, I mean scary fast, especially for his size. He's definitely an old soul, very old. I'll have to have him around for the next Feed and Speed so you guys can meet him. He's hella cool.

Yeah, Shinook is a cool dog. He howls like a wolf sometimes and you can feel it in your chest. :)

So your wifey got a job, that's awesome!! I'm glad that situation worked out. Where will she be working? Does it pay well? Maybe you should buy that '93 turbo. Anyway congrats and drop me an email or PM with all the details.

Don't you remember talking about Shinook at Ruby Tuesday's that one time, Phil?

I was actually always wondering where your dog was when I came to visit, Matt, but for some reason I never asked.
