And the bottom drops out.....

Post by legacycontinues »

Me, my wife, kids and the in-laws are sitting around the dinner table a few nights ago when all of a sudden the bottom of my father-in-laws glass drops out. Like if someone sliced it off with a laser.

Has this ever happened to anyone? Why would this happen?

hot water does it. If you slam the glass down you can also do it. Stress fracture.

It's pretty easy to do with a wine glass

Yup. . . I've broken a few glasses in my lifetime by setting them down on the table too quickly / forcefully. Good fun!

It was a regular 16oz glass with cold water in it.

my mom and her sisters, who love to shop, once got an "amazing" deal on some water glasses. It turned out that they shattered without provocation at the slightest temperature change

its from frozen-in stresses in the glass, bad manuf. technique

we still talk about the glasses, all of which broke within a week or two, whenever my mom brings up another fabulous deal

My friggin' boss who slept all day in the compartment of the boat we're doing a stereo instal on. I did my part and was unable to do his as he was sleeping there! And I had to cover for him with the asshole owner of the place. Fuck St. Patrick's Day. Corned beef and boiled dinners suck. Why isn't there a day for Italians or Greeks or anyone else with an actual cuisine?

I'm Irish and I will be the first to admit that boiled meals do suck...Why is it some people don't like to eat red meat but they will turn around and eat pink meat. Red...pink...same family.

...nah, it makes a difference when you're drunk off potato moonshine and 5 foot nothin', wearing a green suit with a matching tophat, swinging a short knurled stick whilst belligerent. Aye lads, it's an unfair world...

I have seen instant fractures with a really really thick glass before.
Someone who will remain nameless, but is on this board, put ice into a glass he directly got from the dishwasher.
That's an extreme temp change tho, what happened in your case is kind of strange.
Hot breath maybee?
Did I mention that this person did it twice, in the period of 2 minutes?
You know who you are :P

Like putting a nice hot pan under cold water in the sink right off the stove?

NOT a good idea. Over time, metal doesn't take kindly to that.

Every time you do that, just imagine you're dipping your front brake rotors into the water. . . and how they would feel. ;)
