Refilling a 4EAT

Post by isotopeman »

I just emptied my 4EAT to change the fluid. It would only take about a quart while refilling. I know more came out - about a gallon and a half. I ran it in neutral to see if it would cycle some fluid through. No luck. I put it in reverse, and it won't move either. Is there a trick to getting fluid back into the transmission? I searched under various keywords to no avail.
Thanks,
-Tom

So far the best suggestion is to put it back into the same hole it came out of...which would mean turning the car on it's side quite a bit. I don't like that suggestion. Anybody?

what? why does it only take a quart? You may have to pour slowly as there's not enough room for all the fluid to travel down the dipstick tube and push air out at the same time. It should hold almost 9 quarts fully empty. That is with the torque converter emptied as well. If all you drained was the pan then start with like 3-3.5 and add as needed.

I'm stumped as well. With the drain plug out, it still doesn't flow down, and we've poked down the dipstick tube trying to break any bubble that might be keeping the fluid from flowing down the dipstick tube. ...so how far can a wagon be tipped without falling over?

Your not putting it in the front diff are you? (bet you're not the first if you are).

Dip stick for the front diff is one the passenger side, ATF on the drivers by the starter.

even so, the front diff can still hold more than 1 qt

Not if it hasn't been emptied.......

Hope you've got more than just the 17mm wrench/socket lying around. If you need to drain the diff it takes a 21mm. Or maybe 19mm, I forget.

Holy smokes!
No wonder it wouldn't go. I have all the tools I need, (if only I had the experience with auto transmissions to go with them  )
...I guess that means I should drain the diff soon.

Yeah, but you were gonna change that diff fluid soon anyway. :P

Gee, I'm pretty embarrassed about that.
Yeah the differential fluid needed to be changed - it reeked!
It shifts much better now, and doesn't bog the engine down when I come to a stop.
Thanks!
