check engine light on, wheres the diagnostics plug?

Post by corndog847 »

yesterday i reconnected some plugs that werent together that i found under my dash, i didnt drive my car until this morning, my check engine light was flashing, im thinking that one of those plugs were for the c.e. light. im gonna go to autozone today, but before i go i want to find out where my diagnostics plug is, i got a 92 subaru legacy sedan :D

I believe its on the left hand side, under the dash piece that covers the bottom of the steering column, its the long piece i think you have to remove. Autozone will knwo where it is ;)

I think the blinking check engine light is the code as well...but dont quote me as its been a year or two since ive had to mess with that plug.

Umm, I think what you did is connect the plugs that allow you to see your diagnostic codes. And the blinking is because it's showing you old codes. If your CEL wasn't on before and you didn't have any driveability problems before, I wouldn't worry about it. They are probably codes that were thrown years ago. You can reset your ECU and see if they come back.

here's a pic of the plugs

On the 92 I believe they are located to the right of the steering column, or at least one set of connectors are.

thanks for the help, this morning i watched the check engine light and it had 5 long flashes then 1 short flash, then this after noon it was just steady long flashes. looking at that picture just now, i did hook up 2 green connectors. yesterday when i went to autozone the guy wasnt sure where the plugs were located, but there were 2 other female plugs, and 1 male, the male has 4 pins, in that picture its in the circle with the green connectors. the guy said that goes into a bigger connector in the middle, didnt say why though.

oh yea, having my battery unhooked for more than 5 minutes erases all codes right? well when i put my stereo in, it was unhooked the entire time, like 3 or 4 hours. so it must be new... my transmission has been kind of running crappy, i got the gear lube and tranny fluid changed a week and a half ago.

so i unhooked the stuff that i had reconnected, and my engine light still came on, so i disconnected my battery for about a half hour, watched alil tv after i did it and before i left i reconnected it, now its just a steady flash, as soon as i start the car it turns on and continuously flashes. is there a way to block that light out? like a fuse or a wire i can cut or something? it makes me nervous

You've kinda confused me now. If you want to tear apart your dash and figure out how to disable the light - knock yourself out.

But, I think one or both of these things are likely:
* you still have the wrong things connected under you dash
* something is seriously wrong with your car that would be easier to fix than disabling the light

I say that because normally, if the check engine light comes on while you are driving (and you don't have your diagnostic connectors still connected) then the light will be solid ON or solid OFF.

This is what I would do
* buy a Haynes guide from any auto parts store
* figure out for sure what all these connectors are you are messing with. Connect everything that should be. Disconnect any diagnostic connectors and anything else that shouldn't be connected
* reset the ECU.
* if the light comes back, use the black connector to read out the flashes. Use the Haynes guide to figure out what's actually wrong with your car
* disconnect the black connector.

take it to a subaru dealership and have them tell you what's wrong. They SHOULD do this free of charge
