What was the point of modifying your car?

Post by greg donovan »

so what is the point of power modding our cars? specifically the sport sedan.

especially if you do nothing but drive them on the street?

why do we do it? i know its fun, but i wanna hear a better reason than that.

i cant even use the full potential of this car on a daily basis. and that is w/no mods at all beyond the AGX struts. if i did i would be in jail and the state would own my car.

i could have 200 CHP pretty easily w/more boost, DP, a IC, exhaust, and some more fuel. or i could have a fair bit more than that w/some tuning.

one thing i am afraid of is that the car is VERY reliable at this point. and if i go to far i will damage things that will cost me ALOT of money to fix. that is not something i want to do. so for now i am going to get the car in sound mechanical shape and then start ramming some more air down her throat next spring. maybe.

so, tell me why you did it.

I don't intend to modify my car further. I wanted to be competitive enough to have fun in autox and be able to run in the hills. I might pick up some bigger brakes in the future, but i'd rather not. I can't see doing more to it without sacrificing versatility.

If i were turbo, i'd intercool and run a few more psi, that's about it.

If i had to replace my engine, i'd build me a 22 with 18 heads and aftermarket cams.

i did it to be unique in a world among ricers. i was one early on in life and did not like where it was heading. i wanted a camaro but where i live its not practical. so im building the car to compete with them.

the most i will do now is upgrade my turbo, make my trans a little stronger and powerful, tires and a tune. beyond that, if the transmission fails ill still be able to use some parts like the torq converter and put them into its new body.

i dont have much money and i need awd and 4 doors. this car was the best way to have the nessities with the fun factor included.

Hmmm, for me it was few different reasons. First it was because there was so much untapped potential there just waiting to be unleashed that I felt ablogated to tap that.....potential (that ones for you J-Money!).

I also love the sleeper aspect. Guys never see me coming. I also wasn't satisfied with the stock performance really and knew that increased performance was very easily attained.

Once you start modding it's like a disease and it's hard to stop.

I also have to say that I had my car long before the WRX hit the states and the whole GT craze so I wasn't just trying to have a "poor mans WRX" or any crap like that either. I'm a purist *puffs out chest and holds nose high* .

For a more effiecnt engine. My IC and crank pully both helped my gas mileage.

If I ever get an SS, I will mod it simply for the sake of modding (something to do, learn a few things, feel good about making something myself) and then I would drive it just to enjoy the results of what I've done. I doubt I would try to smoke anybody on the street or talk a whole bunch of shit, I would just take it out on a fun road at like 2am and enjoy the car and the drive.

Because I can.

I can use the extra power at times on the street without the state taking my car.

I enjoy working on it but I think I have wanted a WRX from the mid 90's when I first saw WRC. So I feel cheated by the weak amount of power we got here in the USA. If I had a Legacy RS I wouldn't be doing a lot to it, exhaust and a little more boost.

Right now I want to put down 225WHP. That's not going to push anything, should be just as reliable if the tranny holds.

on that note and to your "comming out of the woodwork" thread, ive noticed at least 5 more SS's in my area driven by ricer type kids. the best part is that their jaws are noticably dropped when they see my car

Its a fun car to drive stock but every mod makes me realize the potential. However I only plan on heavily upgrading the brakes and suspension. That and keeping it running well and looking good. Shes got alot more life left in her.

I rarely modify my cars. Upgrade replacement of wear items most of the time. If I wanted to go faster, I shoulda bought a faster car. I get crazy dreams sometimes too though.

I like to be known. The Legacy gets a lot of respect. Hell, I was driving to DC last night, and some VW cut me off, so I showed her what was up, vented right in her window (though by accident, I ran out of gear and had to shift), and blew around her. Then at the next light, some guys in a Rodeo were like "WOAH! I Never heard a Legacy sound like that before!"

I get that all of the time. Even from cars faster than me, I get the "holy shit, that thing ain't slow!" I have come to find very few cars I see on the street that are significantly faster than mine.

And I like being the least suspecting fast car in the group....

It's fun :) I feel like I contribute something to the Legacy community. I like you guys, and It's cool if some of you look to my car as inspiration as I have looked to a lot of you guys's cars for things to do and try and play around with :)

Afterall, Boostjunkie was the reason I started modding in the first place :). It'd be fun to have someone else start modding because of something I did.

The very best reason of all.

I won't mod my '92 T-wagon. It's my comfortable car. Luxury and enough power to do 100 if I want too.

Now, my other vehicles don't even remember what stock felt like.

I am of the school of thought that if you have to replace a part... UPGRADE!!

yeah, up til now, almost every one of my "mods" has been because the stock part needed replacing.

besides.. Nobody suspects the blonde in the station wagon. ;)

I have the slowest car in my group of friends, not that it bothers me that much, but a little more power won't hurt.

I noticed whenever i pop my hood at a gas station to check the oil or put power steering fluid in, a couple people will come over and start asking questions or want to talk about it. Sometimes im in a hurry and its irritating but other times its kinda cool.

I live at the base of Pikes Peak about 5 miles from the toll road.
I have a pass that for $100 a year gets me up the peak as much as I want.

Any of you ever drive up pikes peak in a moded SS

I take it you'll be at the subaru sponsored hill climb then? I drive up Magnolia rd which was the steepest maintained road in the world for a while in a modded SS all the time.

I've been watching the race every year since 1972.
Coming up the road before the practice session is a gas.
I still haven't been able to figure if the extra rally sections will overlap with the normal qualifying.
