ever since i bought my suburu, used, from someone i know, its been givin me problems. its a 92 suburu legacy sedan AWD....the first problem was the muffler, got that fixed for 30 bucks, then i did a routine check up and stuff, changed the spark plugs and wires, oil which was about 30-40 bucks, then got the transmission fluid changed,free, because it was hesitating in first gear, i punched and cracked the windshield by accident on a hot and sunny day, that was 100 bucks, and now my car is shifting horribly. in first gear, as soon as it hits 15 mph, it barely wants to move, and it rev's really high, when it gets between 20 and 25 mph, if i let off the gas, it shifts into 2nd gear, then after that it just revs like a mother and doesnt go faster than 45 without reving close to 6rpms. it wont shift into 3rd or 4th gear at all. my dad works at a junk yard, and i had to order a transmission kit, filter and gasket, hes gonna change it for me, i had to call around and order one, the soonest i got it was monday at 8am, today/yesterday....but he didnt have time to change it, the kit was 34 bucks. he cant find another transmission to put in it if it doesnt work or fix the problem. anyone esle have this many problems with their vehicle? or anything close to this? it was a great car, got me everywhere i needed to go, but now to see it almost die on me really sucks. anyone have information on what could help? oh yea, when it shifts, it does really hard, very unusual. i talked to someone i know who knows someone that rebuils transmissions for like 200 bucks or so, could that be an alternative to just getting rid of my subey?

Sounds to me like you gettin work done at about half of what it should cost, if not less?

Try owning something German, or Sweedish!
Rebuilding a tranny for $200, huh? Parts alone are more than that, for any car.

I personally think your living in la la land. Cars with lots of miles tend to wear out, then it costs money to fix them.

You are in luck however. You just happen to own one of the most reliable cars ever produced, AND, used parts for them are like stumbling across cigerette butts at an AA meeting.

Pony up some dough, or get a bus pass mein freuind.

Holy run on sentence. You probably just need a new/used tranny, and you car will be good as new.

around here parts for subarus are rare, ive only seen 2 other subarus in the area, and they were both in michigan, i live just south of the border in toledo. my dad called around to places that they get parts from, and NONE of them have subaru transmissions. does it have to be an actually subaru tranny? or can it just be one that has AWD?

Hey Corndog847, I'm 1hr east of Cleveland (almost to PA) but it's not THAT far from you. I'd guess 3 hours.
Aaaanyway, there are a few Legacies in the yards here (Autos and Manuals both).

I have a spare 5mt trans, but I'm keeping that around for now.
Anyway, if you REALLY can't find one any closer I can give you contact info for the place I know of.

I do feel your pain as far as there being VERY few subarus in the yards around here.
These days, I can finally see a relatively decent ammount of 'em on the roads, but I don't think many folks out here bought up the older subarus. :cry:

It definitely has to be a subaru transmission. Sounds to me like you got a legacy with an automatic with some miles on it. Guess what, it's a car, car's are expensive, subarus are cheap and easy to fix as car as cars go.

Right away when buying a car, you should expect to spend about $100 fixing things, be it a leak in the exhaust, or a general tune-up, and always change the oil. That is basic routine maintinence, no reason to complain about that.

Your windshield replacement was all your fault, don't complain about that either.

Sucks about your transmission, but it seems to me, at least, that you should have been able to feel the transmission on it's way out when you test drove the car. I bought my car over a year ago and could tell the transmission wasn't in the best condition. I'm expecting to replace it within the next 10k miles, because it's slowly getting sloppier.

I don't think that this is the place to post about your car woes, almost all of us have spent loads of money on our cars. I've spent over $2000 on my car in the last year and don't regret a bit of money. You either appreciate having inexpensive, reliable all wheel drive, or buy a honda. I hear parts for them are dirt cheap.

Doesn't sound so bad. I've spent over $3,000 in repairs on my Legacy. Subarus are uber reliable. I see so many old Legacy wagons and GL's around town. They have their share of problems but what car doesn't? Its about as reliable as they come. :two cents:

My car would cost me almost nothing if I drove it normally and just replaced what went bad. I've known much newer Toyotas to have more problems and forget about the Nissans the rest of my family keeps buying for whatever reason.

Cars need tune-ups dude... face it.... I dont see a 13 year old car needing a tune-up as a "problem."

As Laurel said... The windshield is totally your fault

So the only problems I see are the muffler and the tranny... Thats actually pretty damn good for the age of the car... You can't buy a 13 year old car and expect it to be trouble free...

When my tranny went out, I called around and found one at a junkyard in Georgia, (i'm in Florida) and they sold it to me for $400 shipped... You can find a used tranny, it just takes a bit of work... and the fact that your dad works at a junkyard should make it 10 times easier for you to find one...

the filter change didnt help, its still shitty. the guy that changed it said the tranny was done for. i didnt test drive the car when i bought it, cause i got it from a friend's aunt. besides it was only 300 bucks and ive had it for 13 months, so i guess i got a years worth for 300 bucks driving it, despite gas prices.
