Need advice before I buy a 1996 Legacy L.

Post by exile29 »

I'm looking at my first Subaru ever. It's a 1996 Legacy L. It's got about 160K miles on it. Quite a bit actually.
I am going to go to the dealer and check it out this weekend.
Is there anything I should look/listen for?
I know it's got a lot of miles, but the vehical report indicates that this was all pretty much long distance driving over the past 1 1/2 years.
Are there any tell-tale signs that this thing is going to go soon? What are the major points of failure in this model?
Any input is appreciated.
Thanks.

Okay. I've searched and tallied some of the issues associated with Subarus in general and 1996 models specifically.
Please add more if you think it lacks something significant.

1) Check CV boots for cracking/splitting.
2) Listen for misfiring.
3) Check for leakage around head.
4) Check coolant for oil.
5) Check levels/quality of tranny fluid.
6) Fire it up, throw it into drive, kick up the AC to max, and see if it stalls of starts to sputter.
7) Listen for brake pump to keep running after the car is shut down.

How's that? Here are a few specific questions:
Is there any way to check the AWD?
Is there any way to check ABS?
