Wrong timing belt?
I bought a timing belt from Napa (part # 250172) and am trying to install it. I have the timing marks on the cam and crank gears lined up with the marks on the covers, but the lines don't even come close on the belt. Should I just not worry about the lines on the belt, as long as the lines on the gears line up? Or do I have the wrong belt? It seems to be the right length. Maybe the quality control very much sucked when they made the belt? I dunno.

DONT trust the lines. Count the number of belt treads like the manual says. I used white out to figure out where the timing marks should be, and then used spring clamps to hold them in place.
I am actually video taping removing and replacing a timing belt in the next few days if you can wait.

Wait, you think I actually have a manual? Ha! The only thing I have to go by is what I found doing a search here, mainly this:

As nice as it may be to see a video of it done, I really don't want to wait.

That aint gonna cut it. There are a specific aomount of ribs you need to count from the center to the left and right heads. While our engines are supposedly non-interference, you are asking for trouble I suspect if you "just hope for the best".
I can give you the numbers tommorrow.

Ha ha! I'm retarded! It would help if I paid more attention to what I'm looking at. Timing belt on backwards and used the wrong mark on the crank. All is well now, I'm sure I can handle it now. Thanks guys! Sorry I wasted your time!

I taped the timing belt install today. I am adding it to the motor rebuild DVD and am also converting the video to internet friendly file so Legacy Central can host it.
With all the tools at your side, using air tools, and a precompressed tensioner, I changed the timing belt in about 15 minutes. Of course this was with the motor out of the vehicle......

....but still impressive, nonetheless. Videos of involved procedures such as you are producing are a great idea and should be invaluable to the community of enthusiasts here.
