Opinions on the crank/rod journals
Took apart the block today. I'm pretty sure the crank & rod journals are fine, but just want some other opinions.
The crank bearings are ok, but I'm going to replace them. The rod bearings definitely need to be replaced.
Here's pics from today

These pics suck, but do you see the area at the top of the bearing that is a different color?

These pics are better, but the marring/wear isn't as bad as the other two.

The bearings are just worn non-uniformly, and scored at the top. So they should be replaced. You could probably get away with putting them back in....but why....

Please don't even mention reusing those rod bearings.
I was worried aboit mine, until I saw that discoloration. Mine just have scratches around them, no changes in color. I do have more carbon buildup than you, though. I wish my block was that clean. Mine was leaking a little oil and is covered in gunk. I wish I would have pressure washed it when I brought it back from the yard.
I'm assuming a little rub on the crank from the rods is normal. I wasn't too concerned but looks like it may be a normal thing.
Does anyone know what kind of tool is used to mill the deck of the block? I can think of a couple that would work, but I'm not shure which would be best. It looks like it would be pretty large in diameter.
I just put the last coat of polyurathane on my workbench so I should be able to get some decent pics soon.

I'm not saying re-use the bearings (that would be foolish). What I'm getting at is if you think they're worn badly, that suggests that there's another problem somewhere else.
They look alright to me I guess, but if you're saying they're worn non-uniformly, you might wanna take your crank to a machine shop to check the crank journals to make sure they're not slightly tapered or something like that...

Yeah, the way they're worn points to a possibly out-of-round journal. I'd get it checked out to make sure. My rod bearings had a clean uniform wear stripe running around the center of all of them. Mains looked great.

I'll mic the crank & rod journals and check them against the fsm specs.
93forestpearl, my block was quite nasty. I spent quite a bit of time cleaning it. Check out these pics

Well I measured things, and everything looks fine to me. No out of roundness is apparent.
If it was out of round, the other side of the bearing should be worn at the same spot. That wasn't the case.
It should be alright.

Almost sounds like your crank was wobbling. Maybe the pulley wasn't tightened down enough. Also, if your camera has a macro button, use it when you take close up pics. Most the time it looks like a flower.

I was using the macro on most of the close ups

I need to find someone to help me carry in the workbench I just built. The lighting in my garage sucks, its about as old as the house (~1920s). I'll try to get some pics of the motor up this week some time.
Does anyone know what a reasonable price is to get the block hot-tanked? One place quoted me over $100 which I think is a little steep.
In our case, would a three or five angle valve job be beneficial at all? Or would it be better to hold off untill a set of updated heads and intake are in order?
I was told that the crank should be good to go and I don't need to get the journals polished or anything. I wonder how expensive it is to get the rotating assembly balanced.
THis reminds me, I have a stock turbo and set of rods that I have no use for. THere's no play in the turbo as far as I can tell, and I cleaned the compressor up real nice one night when I was wasted. Maybe I should make a post in the parts shed.

Yeah I think $100 is a little much for getting it hot tanked, but then again, I haven't priced it....
