cheap plastic

Post by petridish38 »

So I get in my car and try to roll down the window only to find that the switches had fallen through into the door... the cheap plastic broke
Image
This is one of only a few complaints that I have about these cars. This is about the 10th piece of plastic that has broken on this car. all of my driver's side window switches dont work anymore because, upon further inspection, I found that there are small pieces of plastic in the switch that break and cause the switch not to work... so now i have to go around to every window and roll each one up with their respective switches...but thats another story....back to the point...
The problem that I have is that there are no Legacies around here in any junkyards... the only place that I could find one was about 40 or 50 miles from me and they only had one and it was pretty much stripped....and they will make me buy the whole door instead of taking just the plastic piece that i need....and they charged me $11 for a sunvisor that wasn't in the best shape...but since I didn't have one...i had to buy it... So if any of you have or could get the plastic thingy above for a tan interior(maybe even the switches), I might be interested in purchasing it. I'm very tight on cash right now and don't know how much I could afford...but i need a new one!!!

Unfortunaley any plastic that is 13 years old is bound to be brittle due to the sun's relentless untraviolet attack on it. This is a common problen with ALL cars not just our subies.

Another benefit of tinting is that it would add UV protection. Mine's been on for 7 years now and my plastic seems to be holding up pretty well.

Yeah, I used to do window tinting also. I used a film called "Sun Guard". The more expensive stuff actually had ground metal flake in it to deflect the sunlight. (but it was still smoke in color not that mirror crap). When the place I was working went out of business I was given ALL the tint we had in stock :!: I might have some for sale now that i think of it ;)

You probably need 30' per car. I have the premium stuff which costs more than the cheap purple crap. I can sell it for 3 dollars a foot + shipping. Let me know if your intested.

They only offer the cheap stuff in retail stores. If you have never tinted before you might want to buy some of that cheap stuff to practice on before you get the good stuff and f$%@ it all up.

Mike-
What percent tint is it? Any other info like the manufacturer or what makes it premium. Thanks

the good stuff has the metal flakes in it, mine has it. Great stuff, I wish I could tint my windshield too. It'd keep the heat down SOOO much more.

Any problems with the tint coming off of the rear defroster, like so many cars with the cheap stuff have happen?

The rear defroster has nothing to do with it. Its the glue itself that decomposes from the sun. The glue lets go and you get bubbles.

Yup, it's not the defroster. The older glues that were used tended to bubble after being in the sun for a long time. I've got 20% on the rear five windows and 35% on the front two. If I were to do it again, I'd do 20% on all seven. Subaru's are fairly easy to tint because the doors are frameless which allows you to cut the tint pretty easily.

My tint's been on my car for 6+ years. The only thing it has done is that the very small part where he overlapped the tint pieces on the defroster lines have changed slight colors, but you have to really really look to see it. It may have faded a tad, but you really can't tell. Looks as good as day it was put in.
