As I took apart the block today, I noticed a few things I thought were odd.
There are two oil passages on one side of the block. They have o-rings, but basically dead end into the other block half. I'm not really sure why they did this....other then the fact that was the only way they could drill it to get the passages where they wanted on the other side. Here's some pics of what I'm talking about.
It's the two o-rings in the bottom left

You can see where they mate up on the other side of the block

There's a ball bearing looking thing in the oil separator area. The only thing I could think of is that it's relief valve of some sorts.

I noticed something similar on the crank too. It seems to be tied into the oil feed for the rod bearings. You can kind of see the hole on the crank webbing in this pic

Just a general rebuild comment/tip. The rods have specific lettering on them as well as the caps. Write this info down on a piece of paper and relate it to their position on the crank before you remove them so you can reinstall in the same position.

Also, the rods have a subaru emblem thingy on one side. This side faces towards the front of the engine, or at least it did on my motor.

Does some of the lettering on the rods correspond to the block specs in the middle of the block next to the EJ22?
Also, that symbol is the Fuji Heavy Industry symbol.

I'm not sure if the lettering corresponds to the block. I'll have to take a look at the FSM.
Yeah I goofed....it's the fuji emblem.
Other thing I forgot to mention. When I loosened the bolts holding the block together, they hissed, like they were releasing trapped air.

My block made the same noise when I removed the bolts.

Mine was hissing because it was pissed I wasn't rebuilding it to put back in.

The marks on the top of the block have nothing to do with the rods. The letters are piston bores and the numbers are bearing sizes...
BTW,
As an OT sidenote, I pulled a head and a piston from the RS-Ra this weekend. Anyone wanna host some pics for a new thread?
They are truly artful...

I believe Thawa has some massive webspace for just this sort of purpose, thawa.net IIRC. I think it's open invite for any member of this board for related photos. Well, at least I hope it is. If it isn't, I'm being an ass by inviting you to someone else's webspace, and if that's the case I beg-a forgivaness prease.
If I had more than 5MB of space, I'd offer to host, but it's already kinda full...

Matt, check out the stuff you need to know forum. There's info in there how to access thawa's picture gallery.
BTW, I wasn't referring to the lettering/marks on the block, I was referring to the marks on the rods themself. If you look at the pics of the rods, you can kind of see it.
