Taking on water

I've been getting water in my spare tire compartment. I'm talking four inch deep puddle of water yet my trunk shows no sign of leaking and I can't see any wetness in my trunk upholstery. Any ideas where it could be coming from?

whenever I see that I think about the seals around the rear tail lights - if there is a gap then all the water trying to drain from the perimeter of the trunk lid runs though the crack and right down to the bottom of the trunk
