Decisions decisions decisions...

Post by BAC5.2 »

Ok, cliffs notes.

Woman backed into my motorcycle and the shop wrote me an estimate for $800. The repairs weren't any saftey issue, and you can't tell (even I can barely tell). The bike didn't fall over and nothing is bent.

So my dilema.

What to do with the $800. I could treat myself to an exhaust for the bike, and have the motorcycle be as obnoxiously loud as the car.

or I could get a mountain bike, of which I've lacked for about a year.

The exhaust would only be around $400 bucks, and the bike around $1200.

The exhaust is a now-or-never, as my buddy who is hooking me up, is leaving the shop he works at. Retail is just over $800 bucks.

I'm getting horribly out of shape, and need to start doing something to get myself back into shape. The question is, do I ride, or do I just loaf and spend most of the money on bike stuff.

I thought about using the money to start my motor work, but I'm a few days away from having a written motor build plan, and I'd like to stick to that instead of straying off buying random motor goodies.

So what would you do? Promote health and fitness, or treat myself to an exhaust?

I'm an avid mountain biker, so I'd definately get use out of the mountain bike and I'd enjoy it more than twice a week for sure. On the other hand, I ride my motorcycle every day, and a little aural arrousment never hurt anyone either.

as for bikes, ive been becomming a fan of this thing called streetfighters. bascily stripped down exhaustless and shortened bikes. most of that modding is free.

mountain bike is cool but where do you get a good one for 800 bucks

Spend it on the exhaust or on your car. You'll probably be kicking yourself later for missing out on cheap parts.

mountain bike of course. go with something used and a couple years old. is there a bike swap type event in your area? $800 would go a long way at one of those. but maybe there is not one happening any time soon. ridemonkey.com or mtbr.com had some good deals in their classifieds usually.

There's no such thing as cheap engine parts. Cheap and durable don't go hand in hand when it comes to internals. The insurance money would just barely cover the cost of the con-rods that I want.

As far as the bike, I'll just buy new. I work at a bike shop and will get a better deal on a new bike than I would ever get on a used bike. I don't have the time to custom build another bike, so I won't do that for a while.

As for tuning the car, it's basically stock again (10psi) and won't have much done to it until the motor goes in. No sense in tuning for a setup that won't see another year.

I need to get a bike, it's something that I am dying without. I'm definately getting out of shape, and could use the exercise. I might hold onto the cash and wait to see what 06 brings on the bike front.

I'm getting anxious for my built motor, but patience breeds rewards. I'm not going to do it, unless I can commit myself to doing it right. I can't do that right this second, so I am going to wait. I'll probably just start saving like mad and do it next summer or next winter.

I'd go for the bike also. I'm more a road bike guy, but if I didn't have my unidentifiable inner ear issue I'd be riding that all the time.

I was referring to the exhaust as the cheap part. $400 for an $800 part is pretty damn good.
But you seem to want the new bike more, which I can understand.
Just watch out for kids with fireworks, I was riding the other day and some little shits chased me in cars and shot bottle rockets and such at me.

Do the exhaust on the bike man. It will get you more girls.
Now being in shape by buying a new mountain bike will get you girls also, but no girl ever asks to ride on the back of your ten speed...

My friend owns a shop, and after seeing the turbo hayabusa video (ghostrider's 499whp 'busa), he wants to turbo my F4. Not gonna happen for quite some time.

I say you use it for SEM! You're going to need it for the build anyways so do it now. Even if your build is a year out I would start getting the parts now so that it's spread out. Think ahead mang.

But she thinks I'm hot, so everything is gravy.

Right now, it'll go in the bank and we'll see what comes of the motor. It's often difficult to fathom dropping so much money into such an old car, and myself being so young doesn't make it much easier. I need to start looking towards my future, and thinking less short-term. Difficult, I know, because I know it'd be awesome to have a 500whp Legacy. But at the same time, I'd like to be sure I can afford to be silly with my car when I am older and retired.

Since I still live at home, I'm going to start putting as much into savings as I possibly can and just leave it there for a rainy day or whatever. I think, at the moment, my car will not see a huge motor just yet.

Which is why I'm likely going to sell my car and be happy. Saving money for retirement is a good idea but at the same time, you're young so I wouldn't even worry about retiring. I'd focus more on having a good time but I'm sure you don't need a fool like me telling you that.

Oh yeah, and it always cool to have a chick think you're hot but I was only kidding. I couldn't care less if one person gets a lift while another gets smacked.

Mountain bike would get my vote.

I've picked up plenty of girls with my 69 Honda with stock exhaust while out and among (not with) the much louder motorbikes. Some large bikes are really sweet - like the Rune Hondas. Few guys have the balls to be confident enough on something smaller or quiter just for the fun of riding it though, and one guy in the department does really well (with the picking up women) with a small old bike with a milk crate on it even...milk crates are cheap and would still leave plenty of money for a mountain bike. Personally, I don't have the balls for a milk crate.
:)

Have you decided by now though?

Well, I just ranted more than I provided anything useful.

You probably realize that one thing that 06 would bring as far as bicycles go is cheaper prices on the 05 bikes. But heck, it should be easy to find something (maybe even used) that you just enjoy riding. It would also be easier to get more exercise if it were more enjoyable. The bicycle would help save money as well if that's a priority. Bicycles are pretty cheap to keep and use compared to a car. The health benefits help ward off expensive medical care, assuming you don't wreck or blow your knees out with bad gearing.
We all like faster cars, but few people are capable of moving themselves around under their own power. It's invigorating, and the fresh air and motion is almost zen-like.

Get the MTB. 1200 is a good chunk of cash for a shop rat that gets to raid the QBP catalogue and EP things, what are you thinking? May I put in a recommendation for a Single Speed, they are cheap and will get you in shape. I’m pretty sure your 4hundo would get a Surly 1x1 rollin’ I built up a Fixed Gear MTB, SS(of course), fully rigid, with only a front brake. And despite being a Frankenbike made up of old parts it sees more ride time than the big $$ XC bike the hucker, and definitely more than the rodie. There’s nothing that strokes the ego more than passing a lycra’d out guy on a climb wearing shorts and a T-shirt on a single speed that doesn’t coast. And most importantly the “does it get chicks” question, Single speeders have legs made of stone, butt included…chicks like good butt’s….at least the one that accosted me last night at the bar.
