Spyware

Post by entirelyturbo »

Okay, about a month ago, I ran over a e-nail and it has seriously punctured all 4 of my e-tires.

I got some spy/adware and ran an Ad-Aware and Spybot check and all that. Fixed all those problems and figured all was hunky-dory. Wrong.

I constantly have pop-ups, which is nothing more than an inconvenience. But lately, I've actually been getting kicked offline (message telling me website is not available offline, Internet light on DSL modem sometimes off), and no matter how many times I run Ad-Aware or Spybot, I still have the same problems.

So obviously I have something down deep somewhere, deeper than these programs look.

Can someone help? I'll post all the screenshots you want...

TIA!

Dumb question -- have you been updating the AdAware and Spybot stuff?

Yes, everytime the AdAware asks me to update, I do it. Spybot has never asked me.

I think SpyBot has an update feature too. Maybe you need to find it in the menu or something?

Sounds like you need to invest in a firewall. I have Norton FW you can have for free but you will have to DL it fro me. (it's easy) Holler at me on AIM.

Maybe time for Norton Anti-Virus in addition of the spyware removers?

Yeah, that's a good one. I found it a little confusing, though, because it will bring up a bunch of stuff that might not be spyware. Make sure you check for updates in Spybot S$D and immunize it occasionally.

1) I have a Linksys firewall router, which is better than any software firewall.

2)I have NAV, but it's only 8.1 so it probably misses some new stuff.

3) I have HiJack, I DL'ed it off you before Josh. If you want me to run it again and post screenshots, lemme know...

Are you running Mozilla firefox? If not you might want to consider it.

Maybe you have a trojan or something. I personally dislike Norton because it causes as many problems as it fixes. Try going to www.trendmicro.com and do the free online scan. It's very effective and has turned up trojans on my computer that came from internet sites, not email or files I downloaded.

Check your add remove programs, check for anything that you haven't downloaded.

Also do you have any extra toolbars on your internet browser? Most kinds of search bars have spyware attached.
Also do you downliad free screen savers, cursors, desktop buddies, etc.? If so most of that freeware is loaded with crap.

This is SIMPLE to fix... here, follow along closely.

Insert your Windows XP Installation CD.
[RESTART COMPUTER]
Yes... press a key to boot from the CD (hope you told it to boot from the CD in your BIOS)
At the blue screen, let it start the XP installation and chose to install a new installation of XP.
Format your partition (you did remember to backup all your important data, didnt you?)
Proceed to re-install XP on your new, spyware-free, PC

It sucks, but its the only sure-fire way to get rid of this crap. I got bit not long ago, and I ran Norton Systemworks '04 on my PC. It found keyloggers and a couple nasty things. I didnt hesitate to Format and re-install XP.

After that, i changed my passwords... eBay, PayPal, eMail etc.

I would also recomend downloading and installing Windows XP Service Pack 2.

Reformatting's what I've done also, but I always have issues reinstalling. Seems I lose hardware every time (CD burner, then USB).

I received no reboot disc or WinXP disc with my computer, and I for some reason haven't been able to use System Restore to restore all the computer's settings back to a previous checkpoint.

No extra toolbars, I make sure of that. Don't DL any screensavers or any other such stuff either.

I have a Compaq which is merged with HP. The System Restore that I mentioned is the same thing you're talking about I think. But I haven't been able to get that to work.

System restore is NOT the same thing as reformatting your partition. I don't think you should reformat unless you can't resolve it any other way first. Forget about Norton, Norton sucks. I've worked on my bud's computer that has Norton which is totally up to date and it DID NOT DETECT three trojans he had on his computer. After I uninstalled any unnecesary programs (Norton, shareware, and any ActiveX objects in IE) and ran the FREE ONLINE SCAN AT TRENDMICRO.COM the problem was resolved. Unless you're on dial-up I STRONGLY RECOMMEND that you got to the website and do the scan. You won't regret it. Formatting is completely unnecesary until you've tried other things first.
I would also recomend downloading and installing Windows XP Service Pack 2.
Hold off on the service pack until you find out what's going on. This can just complicate matters. Service pack upgrades have been known to fuck computers up, like mine for example, if they're infected.

Also, you should run both Spybot Seach and Destroy as well as AdAware to get rid of Alexa, AvenueA and other spyware. CWshredder is also a good one.

One other thing, right click on IE on your desktop then go to properties. Once in there, click on [settings] and then click on [View Objects...]. You shouldn't have anything in there that says unknown or has some funky ass language like [ABDE1547....FF13...} Those are ActiveX scripts that can cause pop ups and hose your computer up. Once you're clear and you've downloaded SP2, turn pop up blocker on, it helps out. Oh and do turn your firewall on and system restore once you're golden.

I work fulltime supporting university students and their spyware habits. Ad-aware and Spybot are excellent and we use the hell out of them at work all the time. Make sure you update and immunize with Spybot or you're not helping yourself much.

I saw someone already mention Mozilla Firefox, that's another smart move to consider.

If you are familiar with registry entries and some of the deeper workings of a windows box you might want to check out "Hijack This". If you run it and look at the list and don't recognize anything: don't mess with stuff. You can make serious trouble in here if you're not careful.

For that matter a 30 second cruise through your "/hkey_local user/software/microsoft/windows/current version/run" registry keys might save you all kinds of headache. But again that one is not for the faint of heart.

questions, comments, concerns? drop me a line. or if need be you can send me a screenshot of your Hijack This list to check out. :)

Same here, if you need help I'm available. There's never been a problem I couldn't fix unless it was a crashed HDD head. Remember, Norton is evil. :)

I'm not sure what you use to access the internet (ISP) but I know adelphia offers their users a free anti-virus/spyware/pop-up and cookie blocker called Freedom Suite.

I run it on all my computers and it works great. It updates itself every 3 hours and doesn't take over my computer by asking me if I want to do anything. It does everything on it's own.

I would reccomend going to your ISP's homesite and see if they offer anything like that.

Okay, I downloaded the most recent AdAware (version 1.06) and downloaded all the updates. It found some 135 problems  and I fixed all those, although it said two files couldn't be fixed.

I also ran Spybot, downloading one update that just came out today. It found 11 problems, it couldn't fix 5.

I told both of them to run again when I reboot.

After all this, I ran HiJack, and took a screenshot:

There are some things I know I need to remove, like the ProxyOverride, localhost thing. Some of the other stuff looks like spyware but I'm not sure.

Anyboyd that wants to pick that apart and post your opinions, I'd be forever indebted to :)
