I just read about this in the ashtray. I suppose a STi MAF sensor would theoretically work, as it's designed to read more air, but would likely be hard to interface with an OBD1 system. (i really have no idea)
How about a MAF sensor from a 95 wrx engine? It would be OBD1, and designed to run with the 16g.
thoughts, opinions?
Overloading the MAF sensor?

JECS MAF sensor from a 90-91 n/a AT or 92-94 n/a cars.
It should give you enough range. There's definitely more in depth threads....

The MAF sensor is paired to the ECU. The ECU has maps for the particular MAF sensor.
It just so happened that the JECS sensor had a higher range then the hitachi sensor.
If you go and put a JECS sensor on a hitachi ECU, the maps will be all wrong. That's where you need some form of engine management to bring things back to where they need to be.
Again, there are some pretty detailed threads, just need to search.

The Denso MAFS (new turbos) are completely different from the Hitachi or JECS MAFS. For one the housing is part of the air filter. The OBD thing doesn't really matter, as all MAFS work in essentially the same way. You'd be better off using a JECS MAFS from a different car if you're going to use a different MAFS. As Josh suggested though, search it up.
