I HATE mosquitos!!!

Post by Legacy777 »

I have never seen a place with mosquitos as bad as Houston and specifically my house! It's just mind boggling. I can walk the garbage out to the street and walk back, and get bitten.

Yesterday I was out in the garage working on the motor, and covered with OFF sportsman shit. The stuff with 30% deet, and those mother fuckers were still after me. You ever been bitten on your forehead? They got me there. I've never seen such aggressive mosquitos.

I bought some citranella candles and stuff to see if they work, but they probably won't stay lit since I have the fan going to stay some what cool.

I HATE houston!

Mosquitos have been weak this year despite the wet spring and winter. I heard the county or someone released millions of dragonflies and I do see much more of them than usual. I don't know if they're the reason for less mosquitos or not, but if they are they need to do this every year.

The most aggressive mosquitos I encountered were in my hotel room in Luxor, Egypt. I must have hit the thing five times, but it would just fly off when I removed my hand. Kept me up for hours. Then the sun came up and the wailing from the loud speakers began and I didn't get any damn sleep.

Worse places I've been bitten is my finger and ... johnson.

They were terrible at Treeline rally. Thankfully there aren't many in the city. That's one thing I like about this place over Alberta and Montana.

Yeah 100% deet is awesome. I hate mosquitos too, they are one of my biggest pet peeves along with people who don't use their blinkers.

Come to Florida Josh, you'll realize how good you have it.

I dunno why it is, but they avoid every part of my body but my ankles. They LOVE my ankles for some reason. I can't wear shorts or sandals at night anymore if I'm gonna be outside for a while, coz they just swarm towards my ankles.

But here in this humid climate, and add to that all the puddles we have around here from all the rain we've gotten this summer, and it's been a human-in-a-mosquito world around here.

Heh, try rural Pennsylvania. If you think Houston is bad, that's like a party compared to up here. I have woods right behind my house..and that is a major source of all things bugly and arachnid-like.

Houston is plenty humid......I'm not saying all of Houston is this bad, but for some reason my place is horrible.

Pennsylvania has nothing on the mosquitos here. I lived up there for about four years, it was no way near as bad....at least in the areas I was at.

Alaska. They looked like clouds and you couldnt see as far because of the thickness. It's amazing.

Deet dries out my skin.

Incorrect sir. Anything above around 30% deet, and there are no noticible improvements in bug deflection. The difference is barely there. If 30% isn't cutting it, chances are, 100% won't do any better. The main difference is the length of protection, and you can always reapply 30% deet if you have to.

The problem with Deet, is that it's commonly overapplied, and it'll do some damage if you ingest it.

If 30% wasn't cutting it, you may want to try some non-deet products. Personally, I rarely use bug spray, but when I do, I tend to use deet free stuff, and I don't have many problems.

Yup. Such a pain to explain this to customers though, especially the hunting morons who know everything. I swear, those guys go out to the woods so they can get drunk and have homoerotic experiences. God they're annoying.

Mosquitos might be annoying, but what's more annoying is being sprayed for west nile. We've had planes spraying in different sections for the past week. You're not supposed to go out past 8 until they're done spraying.

As I said, it's very easy to improperly apply bug repellant.

I've been in situations where the bugs would eat a person alive, and 30% (when I still used Deet), was much more than adequate.

Personally, I'm a fan of buzz-off stuff. An outdoor company called ExOfficio makes clothing with buzz-off infused in it, and that stuff works VERY well.

You can also buy it in bottles.

Depending on where I am going, I may choose to use Deet simply because of the density and variety of bugs. No deet repellent is great for every day kind of use, and as a bonus most of them are all natural, when the going gets really tough, or there is a heavy risk of infection from bugs (common to heavy bug population), Deet is a little bit of a safer bet. When I DO use Deet, I stick with Bens 30% and never have problems.

I wear long clothing, and if it gets real bad, i go in the tent. Deet really wrecks havoc on my skin (although it works ok if you put it on clothes) and i've never found an alternative that didnt require constant reapplication.

I don't seem to be very attractive to mosquitos though, so my best solution is to bring a friend with me into mosquito habitat. :D

Scott - Try Buzz-Off. They say it's good for around 4 hours, but I've had good luck with it for a bit longer than that. Good for day hikes in hot weather.

I'm not to attractive to mosquitos either, so I rarely have a problem.

Sawyer makes a wash-in deet based bug repellant you might also like. You simply wash it in with your clothes, and it'll stay on for a few wash cycles. That stuff is actually pretty cool, and works pretty well. The ExOfficio Buzz-Off clothing I was talking about before, holds the repellant for something like 72 industrial wash cycles.

It's expensive, but it's really good. Quick dry, light-weight, and highly breathable. PLUS, they don't feel weird, or look weird, or smell weird.

I bought a bug zapper with a skeeter lure built in. I have to change the cartridge once a month but it seems to do the job.

I'll have to look into one of these. Nothing like the frying of bugs

Got any links to specific mosquito lure ones? Or brand names?
