rusty oil pan

Post by pgoober »

The oil pan on my '93 Legacy appears quite rusty and I'm wondering if it is possible for oil pans to eventually rust through. Should I replace it before I have a real problem?

Thanks.

I don't think our oil pans are made of metal. I think they're made of some sort of polymer...correct me if I'm wrong. But, I don't think the pan on my '91 will ever rust through.

They're made out of metal.....

It's probably surface rust.....If it looks like it's getting more agressive and the rust is not surface rust, I'd think about replacement.

Mine doesn't look or feel like it. Feels like it's made out of some hard plastic.

Trust me....they're stamped from steel sheet.

Try sticking a magnet to the side of your oil pan. It'll stick.

Stamped steel as Josh said. They get dented and rust all the time.

Oil pans rust through relatively commonly. I'd try cleaning it up to remove the rust and seeing if it's still solid. If it is, I'd throw some rust inhibitor and prime/paint it. Replacing it is a little bit of a PITA, but not bad at all compared to other cars (or boats).
