Which tranny to use

Post by medic »

:?: Have a 1991 Legacy wagon, nonturbo, 4eat. Not sure of the ratio yet. Trannie is bad: lost reverse unless gunning the motor and then only 1-2 mph; starts out in 1st then hangs as the rpm's increase then eventually slams into 3rd; changed fluid and filter without solving the problem. Resolved to either replace or rebuild it. Can't really afford to have it rebuilt so I'm searching for a replacement.

Difficult to find a used Legacy transmission in my area from junk yards (northern indiana). What other transmissions can I search for? What years and or models will work?

Thanks,
John

First off, is yours 2WD or 4WD? I would guess it to be easier to find a 2WD one, they were more common. I would think any 2.2L 4EAT for whatever your drivetrain is should work, that includes Imprezas as well.

Try www.4subarusuzukikiaparts.com, they're in California, though.

I'm surprised you have a tough time finding Subaru parts in Indiana when their production plant is in Indiana.

I used a 95 impreza transmission. Important part is to get a pre-97 (later may work, not verified) with a matching rear differential.

If you car is 4.11 rear, then either find a donor with 4.11 gearing OR get a 3.9 tranny with the 3.9 diff.

Which Trannie

Sorry, thought I put everything in the post. (late night post) The transmission is fulltime allwheel drive (4wd).
188,468 miles but the last 100 miles or so have been in question. Bought the car used and it has evidence of being wrecked. Otherwise it has been a terrific car.
