93 L...Once a week shudders, loses power, pops...

Post by MistyDawn93L »

So I recently aquired this 93 legacy L. Now from what I hear, the problem is that every once and a while the car will shudder and lose power, or lose power and die, or shudder and make a loud bang and cut out. Now I have never expierienced any of these problems as I just got the car. The car has a new fuel pump, filter, plugs and wires, and the timing belt snapped and was replaced by a local shop (shuddering problem existed before the timing belt went though). I was thinking possibly ecu, or maf? I'm a Z guy, so the subaru thing is new for me. Thanks for any help. Oh and its a 5speed.

Have you checked the ECU codes. Instructions can be found on my site under notes & tips, engine related.

I had similar issues with losing power....turned out to be the MAF, so I'd suspect that. But check the codes to see if anything is stored.

The MAF is pretty easy to clean if you use a q-tip and rubbing alcohol. You should probably do that anyway. The only time my car has popped and lost power was the other day when my 02 sensor wires somehow melted together while i was driving.

Thanks, I'll try that too. Could a bad o2 sensor on these cause intermitten problems like this? I know on my Z31, I can unplug the o2 sensor and run the car to somewhat trouble-shoot it. The only thing is, this car will start back up after about 2 minutes anyway, so its been hard to pinpoint.

I would say MAF too.

These cars rely on O2 sensors like they rely on canola oil for fuel. I was having some issues with bad idle (turned out to be an alternator issue), and just to rule out the O2 sensor, I unplugged it and went for a drive. It took about 10 miles of driving before the Check Engine light even came on :?

What Z's do you have? Nissans are my fave car behind Subaru.

So I ran the codes and everything came up ok. I'll try it again later, but so far the car has been runnig great. I'm starting to doubt the driver.

As for the Z's, I have 84 300zx that I'm halfway through converting to turbo, and have decided to add a little now that the engine's out (intercooler, more fuel..muahahah) but I also had an 85-T which is where I am getting most of the parts for the swap.
