Rear Wiper took a shit

Post by LaureltheQueen »

It no longer has any resistance, I can literally spin it. That was fun when moisture accumulated on my way to class. Is this something that can be repaired, or do I need to get a new one at the JY?

Check the nut that holds the arm to the shaft, Subaru uses a serrated tapered seat, not a spline to hold the arm, sometimes the nut gets a little loose and the shaft just spins in the arm. Especially on the rear wiper, both my RX and GL wagon had this problem.

Hope that’s it (if not, we can go deeper :P )

is this nut located inside the hatch, or is there a cover on the outside of the wiper arm?

All the Subaru wipers I've seen have the nut on the outside under a little cover, tho the cover is often missing. I've never had a Legacy wagon so I guess it could be different.

All_talk is right, the cover is under this piece that doesn't look like it really is a cover at all (on my car at least). Just pull it up from the base of the stalk towards the arm, I'll try to get some pics up as Phil (BAC 5.2) wants them for his Forester.

the wiper arm had come loose somehow. I flipped it up, and unscrewed it(it unscrewed with no pressure) and then pulled the donut off to tighten the I believe 21mm nut, then screwed the wiper back on, tightened it up and got it in place. worked like a charm
