cel after rain/snow HELP! asap!

Post by 92whitelegacy »

anytime it rains hard, or snows my CEL goes on and stays on for as long as it takes to dry the engine while driving. Any ideas on why this might be happening? im stumped

One of the knock sensors is getting wet. I wouldn't worry about it unless your car starts acting weird.

the car does start acting weird its drives like it should but when u get on it it only feels like its boosting about 7 psi. When in reallity the boost gauge clearly reads about 15psi so that is what worries me

Well, the ECU will go into a limp mode when it doesn't see the knock sensor signal. So even though you may be running 15 psi the ECu is retarding timing so the car will feel slow.

A wet knock sensor will set the timing to a default retarded position which will cause a big drop in performance. Sounds like your system is functioning correctly.

I'm guessing you have removed the deflector under the scoop... makes it far more likely to get water on the knock sensor. This is a common enough problem, maybe we should look into making a shield of some sort.

lol. It's a knock censor nonetheless.

The knock sensor outputs a very low level signal and typical uses a shielded lead to protect that signal. I suspect the sensor itself is potted or sealed and that the water short may be in the connector or other point in the wiring harness. A good coating of contact grease in the connector may be all that needed, but I haven’t really looked into it. When I get around to installing my TMIC and pulling the deflector I’m sure I’ll have to address it... after all, what’s the point of having a Subaru you cant drive in the snow.

Just some thoughts
