let the lynching begin...

Post by magicmike »

So I test drove an 05 sti tonight. They have 2 leftovers on the lot and about 5 or so 04's program cars with less than 2k miles on them. I wasn't able to take it out on back roads only the highway so I was only able to see how it would accelerate from certain speeds. Now I have read on this board and other places on how amazing this car is and I must say that I was not impressed. I was able to wind out almost every gear and I never felt the kick back in the seat feeling. Dont get me wrong it felt very tight suspension wise and brakes seemed fine to me also but damn, I cant believe that my tleg seems much faster. I'm left befuttled by this experience and cannot see spending 30k on one of these.

yeah you need to drive it spritedly and launch it at about 6000 rpms... its an oem car so its a bit smoother than something with punch. upgrade the turbo and it will have that punch.

It's all about your perspective I guess...

how loud and rattly is your legacy? old loud and rattly cars feel way faster even though they may be slower than a brand new feeling car.
unless of course you have one bad ass legacy.

I thought my leg was fast but I didn't think it was faster than an sti. I havent raced too much but the only car that beat me was an srt4 on the highway but I think it was heavily modded. I know my tleg is loud with tons of turbo and exhaust sound but the actuall kick back feeling I normally get when I punch it in my leg I just did not feel in the sti. I cant beilieve that 8 grand in a tleg engine would make if quicker than an sti so I'm confused...

There's a difference between torque and actual times. The STi is quick. Even my slightly modified leg feels quick to me, but when trying to catch up to an STi, you feel the difference, and believe me, I've driven both plenty

yea the torque will get you thinkin. i have plenty of torque/acceleration that feels fast at first, but once i hit the higher RPMs, my car feels slower as i have less HP. wish i had more Horsepower... :(

Similar experience to what Laurel was talking about:

My car (EJ22E) feels like its quicker than my girlfriends car (a GM 3100 Engine).

Now the 3100 would kick my butt in a drag, and I know this, but the difference is throttle response. My throttle feels a lot more responsive, in hers, you don't feel much of anything unless you put the pedal to the floor.

the only conclusion will be to find someone with an sti thats stock and race him ;) In the meantime I've started looking into tranny swapping options. I'd like to find an awd imprezza with a blown motor and drop my motor in that.

That's what ive been thinkin too. those do weigh a lot less than the legacy.

On another note, is the 93-95 2.2L impreza wiring/ECU the same as a 90-94 2.2L Legacy?

Sorry to thread hi-jack...
