scantool help...

Post by Natoe »

alright, so i got vrg's scantool program to run on startup on an old omnibook pentium I, i hacked apart a printer cable, and used a tester to find the correct wires for pins 1, 13, and 25. i checked and double checked that they are in the right spots....(because i had it backwards the first time)

it gets to "reading rom ID" and thats it....

i grounded it on the main ECU ground wire where the 2 go to 1 wire, would that be a problem..? seems like the most logical place.

does the ECU need to have full power to it? ignition power? my battery is almost dead, but hooking it up to a car by jumper wires and it still didnt work :(

i need it to work so i can tell what ELSE is wrong with my wiring job!
(ECU is in my impreza)

any ideas of what i should check or why it wouldnt work? im taking the select monitor wires straight from the ECU where i cut them.

thanks for any help!

Are you actually using one of those connectors that plugs into the select monitor connector? Or are you just wiring things directly to the ECU?

If not, I'd recommend you wire things through the connector and how it's recommended in Vikash's writeup.

I fought and fought to get the scan tool working on mine (never did :() but if you search there should be a thread of mine where Vikash and I went through a bunch of ideas, might be worth reading over.

that sucks... worked great for me. I just used alligator clips into the connector under the dash (you obviously don't have this due to a swap?)

yep sorry, its in a 95 impreza, i spliced all the corresponding wires to the new ECU, added the new ones for the MAF and boost stuff. (i modified the old harness to work) i even started it up once like that, without the IAC hooked up, and it revved and died, wont start now.

hmm....so the impreza doesn't have a connection for the select monitor? I would've thought it would.

Well looking over the engine diagram, you should be able to just ground that and it work.....so I'm not sure what's up.

yeah thats what i thought...can the scantool work without the battery hooked up? because my battery is pretty shot at the moment.

maybe ill just try feeding the wires into the computer plug instead of the printer cable, maybe i messed that up somehow even though i made sure it was right..
thanks for the input

(going directly from the ECU doesnt change anything correct? same color wires)

The scan tool is powered by the same power that the ECU uses. You need a working battery and the ignition on for any of it to work.
