Partially,
But then you have the risk of running lean under boost because they cannot provide enough fuel.
BTW,
I have an EJ20G closed deck bottom end available. It needs minor repairs. It is left over from the Ej22T heads/ EJ20G bottom end hybrid we built. It was a mean little engine. Too bad the car owner screwed it up and skipped his timing belt.
That's where the damage came from. One piston has some chunks out of it. I have removed the piston, and have a replacement. I just haven't had the time to move the rings over to the other piston and put it back in there...

Oh, believe me, I'd love to, but I need the car to be reliable so I can get caught up with my debts, and then I'll probably pick up an old Impreza or something as a daily driver, and screw around with the Turbo. I just don't want to risk breaking something again until I've got another car.

So my uncle, who is doing most of the work for the swap, wants to make it real simple. I'll be getting the NA crossmember and exhaust manifold. He also wants to run the engine as is if possible, like without swapping the intake manifolds. Is there any way in hell that I can get away with this? I believe the IAC and TPS are the screwed up Impreza style as it is an EJ18, so I'm unsure about that. Thanks

Nope, can't do it. Won't plug into your harness. You have to remove the manifold to remove the harness and change them out. It you are going to that trouble, just swap the manifolds over. Just be sure to pick up fresh gaskets.
And the other part is the IAC, the TPS, and a few other things are issues. The Ej18 has EGR, and the EJ22 does not.
The SIMPLEST approach is to switch over your Ej22T manifold, and then pull out the Ej18 fuel rails w/injectors and put them into the Ej22 manifold...
Oh, and just for the record, an Ej18 can take a ton of boost. I know of one that drove around for 3 months on 2 cylinder when 2 pistons got cracked from 18psi at the drags. Before that, he ran it at 14psi all day long. He was non-intercooled, but did have water injection. You beat an Ej18 like a crack whore and she just keeps coming back for another fix...

OK, so I'll have to use the EJ22T intake manifold then. My uncle thought it would be easiest to see if we could just drop it in as is, and I didn't think that would work, but I just wanted to make sure. Thanks
Damn, what kind of power does an EJ18 make at 14psi?

So, does the Impreza crossmember work on a Legacy by chance? We dropped the one the engine came from and it would make it real damn easy if it would work. I need to know if the crossmember and the things attached will work. Not sure what they're called, but there's one on each side, attached to the body via two 19mm bolts each. If it doesn't work, no big deal, there's about 25 1st gen Legacies in the yard. Another part of making it real damn easy would be using the NA ECU. My uncle wants to use the one out of the Impreza we took the drivetrain from, but I don't think it'll work. I'll need the Legacy one, I'm thinking, but is the NA ECU plug and play? I'll be looking over the ECU pinouts this evening before I go in to work tonight.
Also, if it at least has the NA 2.2L ECU, will it still pass emissions next month, anyone know? My inspection and emissions expire 1/06.

#1. You must use the non-turbo crossmember. Doesn't matter if it is Impreza or Legacy. They are the same.
#2 Can't use the NA ECU. Totally different connectors. The Impreza one is a 3 plug and your Legacy is a 4 plug. Not even close.
#3 you could use an Ej22 LEGACY ECU, but you would need to move the position of the crank position sensor and the cam position sensor. For some reason they reversed their ECU placement from turbo to NA.
#4 an Ej18 at 14psi only makes around 190hp or so.
#5 There is a very real chance you will fail emissions...

Hmm, why exactly would it fail emissions?
Also, I'm looking at the ECU pinout http://www.graphics.cornell.edu/~v/ecupins/ , and there is the Cam angle sensor (shield) on both pin 3 of connector B56, and pin 6 of connector B58. Do I need to do something with these?

Ahh, crap, I think I've got it down. On that pinout, I need to switch
B56.1 - B58.4
B56.2 - B58.5
B56.3 - B58.6
right?

Seems you've got the pinout switch figured out for the NA ECU. I am still not sure it's going to pass emissions though. The problem is using the Ej22 ECU on a 1.8l engine it is probably going to be very rich at idle and under partial throttle. This will have your CO readings way out of spec for a clean burning car. It's a crap shoot. Even if you use the 1.8l injectors, the maps may still have you too rich. I think really the only thing to do is trying it and see what happens. You might have to introduce a small vacuum leak post MAF to lean it out a bit...
And the turbo IAC and NA IAC are identical on the Legacies. Part of why I told you to use the complete turbo manifold...

Well, the swap is done, and it runs, kinda. I have no AC compressor now though, because my uncle didn't feel like putting it back in. I'm using the EJ18 with the NA EJ22 ECU, and its throwing a couple codes. 49, 23, 42, and 33. I got the 49 with the aluminum MAF, so I switched to the plastic one I had sitting around, and haven't gotten a chance to clear the codes to see if it comes back. Now 33 is the VSS2, which is part of the speedometer, right? It reads the correct speed when I'm moving, so I don't understand why that one comes up, maybe because of the Impreza speedo cable? Now, I just don't understand the idle switch code. Would swapping the TPS fix this?
Also, the Power light is flashing when I start it, and I guess because of the idle switch being screwed up, I cannot check the TCU codes. The damn thing won't shift until 3400 or so, and I've only got the first 3 gears. Would I need to swap in the Impreza TCU to have the transmission work right?
Overall though, it's not as slow as I thought it might be. I guess it's the fact that I've only got the one drive belt and the 4.11 gears that help that.

Does the EJ18 have a 4-wire or 3-wire tps? If it's 3-wire....it may be kind of hard to get rid of the idle switch code.
Which trans are you using? The impreza or legacy? Why can't you check the TCU codes?

I swapped the intake manifold from the EJ22T, so I'm using the original TPS from the Legacy. So, the only codes that came back were the 42 and now the 32, which is understandable, because I have yet to extend the O2 sensor wires to reconnect that.
I'm using the Impreza transmission, and I am not sure why I cannot check the codes. I mean the one part of the procedure mentions pressing the gas pedal to turn off the idle switch, so maybe I can't get them because of the idle switch problem?
Also, I just wanted to thank you guys for all the help with this whole thing.

You just need to connect the black test connector wires together to check the codes. You don't need to do anything else.

I've been getting my TCU codes using this procedure: http://www.surrealmirage.com/subaru/trans.html
Ever since the swap, I haven't been able to, and it doesn't use 4th gear.
I swapped the TPS the other day, and cleared the codes. Only the O2 sensor code pops up now, and that's probably because I'm running at 3000 RPM constantly because it won't shift into 4th, and it's the same O2 sensor from the Turbo exhaust setup.
The damn thing does run rich, and is flooding constantly. I've been thinking, would all the electronics work properly with the EJ18 ECU from an Impreza? I mean if it's running rich because of the EJ22 fuel maps, then it'll run fine with the EJ18 maps, but I would guess that it's gotta be a bitch and never be easy to have anything work right. With my luck the Legacy electronics won't run properly with an Impreza ECU. I mean, I understand that I put an engine in the car that was never meant to be there, but I just want to get it to pass emissions this month.

And whenever I get out of it, there is a heavy gas smell, and sometimes it won't start unless I treat it as if it's flooded, and floor the gas pedal to start it.
I think it might be a good idea to recap what all the car has on it now:
EJ18 with EJ22T intake manifold and throttle body.
EJ18 fuel injectors.
Impreza 4.11 transmission that stayed bolted to the engine to make it easier.
EJ22E ECU with the 6 wires switched to make it work properly.
Some hackjob of an exhaust using an Impreza y-pipe, the turbo downpipe, and the rest of the stock exhaust. (I think. My uncle welded the shit together himself after the U Pull-It wouldn't sell us the Legacy y-pipe with cat, because of the cat, on Christmas Eve no less

Okay, keep the plastic MAF sensor then. And make sure there's no code 49. Code 49 could cause rich running.
I think the flooding may be caused by one of the injectors or injector o-rings leaking. Are you confident that's not happening?

Well, I believe I found the source of a problem
Last night I had a third engine bay fire (the other two were very minor, and with the second EJ22T). I went back to the car this morning after I got off work, and found that one of the injectors was spraying fuel out the cap type thing. Luckily last night someone grabbed an extinguisher, (not beer like the one guy poured on my engine
), and we got the fire put out before something major melted, or worse.
The only casualties were the driver's side plug wires, and the drivers side front injector's wires and plug. My dad took me to the parts store for plug wires, and the U Pull-It and we grabbed a couple injectors and threw one in and I spliced in the new plug.
The car not only runs again, but is now very smooth at idle. I've found that EJ18's run like shit with EJ22 plug wires. I don't know if it's just my experience, or if there is actually a difference between the two wire sets. I also don't have that gas smell when I get out of the car, so that' was probably the leak I was smelling. You called it there, vrg3.
Now, I just gotta grab an Impreza TCU and see if that fixes my no 4th gear issue...
