haha.. how smashed was the front end after that? That's about the same kinda hit I took on mine, I think I might have been a little higher up though. I mashed the radiator support and made the headlight crooked. I pulled it all out though and all is well now... not perfict, but at least it all fits.

No real damage. The license plate and bumper had scratches on them, that's about it. I probably just got lucky, don't try this at home

longer strut inserts for more travel, longer, stiffer springs, heavily reinforce suspension mounting points, gusseted struts.

Good points. Also, rally guys who take it to the next level usually seam weld the whole body over again and... of course... install a cage. Not one of those phony-balony track day roll bars, but a cage that actually runs to the strut towers to react the loads from the suspension - strengthening the whole body.

This is a little off-topic, but check out these rally car construction photos. That's some workmanship:

I wonder if the travel is really longer on the Outback or if it's just a longer dead length to make the car sit higher.

Ahhh Jon the Korean, he is a member on here. But he drives an impreza now as the legacy got totalled.

He kept saying he was going to post the video of him jumping his car back in dec of 2004 lol. There is a long ass thread on it at awdpirates.net.

I know for a fact that the strut body is longer, so maybe its the same travel. but I am suspecting that there are few macpherson strut cars out there with more travel than a legacy for which good strut inserts are available.
several ford stock springs are very close in diameter to subaru springs, and there are tons of rates and lengths available from circle track suppliers. I think I want to have another go at coilover sleeves, but this time I want long springs that are not 500lb, and steel sleeves that I can weld to a strut body. when I have time I am going to look into strut inserts for maybe +1" travel and go with some long springs about 200-250lb.
