Oops! I unplugged the speedo! Best way to plug it back in?

Post by subawhatsubawho »

I was doing some stuff under the hood today and I guess I tugged on the speedo cable a little too hard and it came undone from the back of the cluster.

Whats the best way to re-attach it? Pull the cluster or feel for it under the dash?

I just did that last month. You have to pull off the bezel around the gauge cluster. I think there are about 10 small screws. But you will have to remove the two 14mm bolts holding up the steering column first to lower it out of the way to get the bezel out. Once the bezel is out, then you can remove the gauge cluster. I think there were 4 bolts on that. Than you just plug the cable back in and put it back together. Be sure not to forget to hookup the hazard light switch as this can cause much grief wondering why the turn signals don't work.

Thanks Noob. I did as you suggested and pinted the bulbs in the cluster blue.

Two birds with one stone.

Omg he made it so much harder than it needed to be.
Take off the bezel, undo the FOUR screws around the cluster, and stick your hand thru the back like a man!

That was a PITA....but it gave me the chance to paint my bulbs while I had the cluster out.

I just had to plug my speedo cable back in, and I was able to do it by taking off the plastic plate under the steering wheel, and reaching up in there without removing anything else. Sure, it was a bitch, and cut up my hand a little, but I didn't exactly have time

well, good luck. I tried painting the bulbs in my dash and had loads of problems. I tried nail polish, stained glass style paint, as well as a higher temp paint and all of them burned off. Maybe I just suck at it though

what color did you paint them?

I painted them blue and they look sweet. I just need to do the rest of the dash now.

I would replace the factory deck but I like the AUX input that I use to run my XM thru. It's missing the volume and bass/trebble knob but it is sleeper as all hell. With the cargo cover over the back nobody knows I got the thump in the trunk.

I FARKING DID IT AGAIN!!!

I was looking for the tranny dipstick when I tugged on the cable by acident. Then I got that sinking feeling like I just screwed something up. It was confirmed when I drove home.

Can I glue this in? Maybe use some silcone on the cables outer metal collar where it meets the input on the cluster?

Don't feel bad, I just did another tranny job and forgot to unhook it first. At least I'm getting pretty quick at putting it back.

I discovered the problem. The stupid grommit is out of the firewall, causing the cable to move a bit too freely.

I'm still glueing that beeothc in there.
