WTF? Where is this air leak coming from?

Post by thefultonhow »

Air is leaking into the cabin at the front of the driver's (left) side. It's not really noticable until 40 mph, but at 80 mph it's annoying as hell. It seems to be coming from relatively close to the defroster vent on the door, but I've tried sealing up pretty much everything close to that (weatherstripping, place where A-pillar meets windshield, hole where power-mirror cable runs through to cabin) and haven't managed to reduce the wind noise at all. It's only an issue on the left side, so it couldn't be a hole into an HVAC vent tube -- could it?

Any ideas?

Most likely weather striping. All my legacys have this problem.

I've glued a lot of the weatherstripping onto the door or doorframe with silicone adhesive, though... I also taped all around the window and took it out for a test drive, and the noise was still there.

do a search. I read on here about a fix for this. It has something to do with support for the side mirrors.

I searched and found this:

I plugged that exact hole completely with spray-in foam last week. No dice.

Plugging it won't always work.

Look where the window gusset (little black triangle) touches the window. Is there a gap there? Before I fixed mine, I had more than enough room to stick my fingernail between the seal and the window on both sides.

What I did was roll down the window, remove the mirror and the trim opposite, and clamp it shut some. When I rolled the wondow back up, the seal was completely flush with the window, and the noise went away.

Do a search for my name and 'window', and you'll probably dig up the thread I posted right after doing it.

I used that method and it mostly fixed it! There's a bit of noise at high speeds but not nearly as bad as before. Thanks. :)

No prob.

My mom's '03 had the same problem, too. We took it to the stealership, and they replaced them under warranty. I'm cheap, so I just clamped mine.
