Car Alarms... reconmendations
Since recently subarus have become targets for theives i have decided to invest in a alarm. What kinda of alarm do you run? reconmendations.. install issues? Im looking to spend right around 200 and install it myself. 2 way pager/remote would be nice, remote start as well if i can find one in my price range. So far ive heard pretty good things about compustar as well as viper. Any others i should look at?
I have a viper car alarm, I think it was 160 plus a dollar for installation since it was bought at quality auto sound. I don't really recomment them though. The range is something like half a mile on the remote and they had some upper models for not a lot more with the pagers.

Some of us run Cliffords. I paid 400 for my intelliguard 8000 installed. I have no complaints on it yet. Mine did not have the pager, but could have been an upgrade option.

Get a Clifford.
I've got the Intelliguard 800. I think it was also around 400 or so. I'd have to dig through my old crap to see though.
I'd recommend you not install it yourself. Especially if you go with an alarm that has a guarantee. I don't know the details, but clifford has a guarantee that they'll pay up to a certain amount if your car is stolen. You have to have it installed by a prof licensed clifford installer. The only thing I don't do is run the clifford stickers since I'm anti-stickers.

Almost all of them are made in the same factory, DEI.
I installed alarms for a couple years. It sucked.
Theres lots of different features between them. The pagers are pretty cool, however their range is unreliable at best.
Honestlly, its 99% install. Make everything look as hidden, and factory as possable. Get an alarm with just the features you want. The more features it has, the harder it is to program and use.
Most people cut the starter wire, I cut ECU or fuel pump cause you can stuff the relay for it somewhere where crackheads wont find it, and bypass it, or just push start the damn thing.
Also, I really like the battery backup sirens. Get the car off the ground, and mount it where it will be the loudest, hardest to find quicklly, but you can get to it with your key if need be to shut it off.
Adjust the shock sensor so its not too sensitive (false alarms suck) But mount it to the steering column. Theives cant avoid touching it. Really the best place for it is in the column plastic, as close to the IGN switch as possable. Different sensors recommend mounting them solidlly, or looslly.
Cheap alarms work just as well as expensive ones, unless its got lowjack or something like that, which I highlly recommend as well.

I have a clifford. It has remote start(which I love) and some other bells and whistles. I park in a bad part of town when I'm at work and haven't had any problems. I always make sure to arm it with the beep(cliffords have the option to arm silently, which works well when I'm coming home late to not anger the neighbors), just to warn any potential theives that the car does have an alarm. I also have a blue blinky light mounted on the daash in the blank panel to the right of the wheel.

You can always jump a starter solenoid easily enough (if it's reachable, like in our cars) even if it's cut, so fuel pump or something would definitely be the way to go.
I'd just get the little lock that goes on the fender so everyone will know not to mess with your car.

yeah... I was changing the oil in a jeep and my oil filter wrench shorted out the starter solenoid when I slipped.. and the jeep almost rolled over me.... had it been in neutral it would've started right up with no oil in it

Been meaning to install a "kill" switch to the ecu for some time.
The posts about the thefts are serious instruction and I put one on Thursday.
A toggle switch, not difficult to reach but hopeless to find by an inquiring hand.

Yeah, next weekend I'll be giving Sylvia a fuel kill switch, the first chance I'll have. Maybe Whitey too if there's time (already has an alarm)
